repair permissions?

could someone explain to me what it means to repair the permissions of something?

people mention it all the time but why do you do it, and how do you do it?

just curious really... for example i was reading up on superduper and it says you should repair the permissions on the drive you want to back up prior to doing so?

I'm not having a go at you on a personal level..

Just saying, often you'd find the answer quicker on Google or even the forums, and you wouldn't have to spend your time making the extra thread.

I often wonder how to do something, but I Google it or look around.

Again, nothing against you, and I certainly don't wish to come across as a troll or as a personal attack, but a few threads lately (not just by you) are always answered in the first post with a link to an answer found by Google.
