In the very near future I will be upgrading my computer to a Core 2 Duo system. To avoid messing about with reinstalling software and such I know I can do a repair of Windows XP.
Is there something similar I can do with my Ubuntu Edgy installation to avoid a complete format/reinstall?

Take a backup of your /home, that should keep all your settings for programs in theree, but then do a reinstall. If you wait a bit, you can catch 7.04
