Son is at Uni and his XPS 9570 , with 4k screen, has a dead mobo. The repair cost he has been quoted is £650 by the Uni repair team. The trackpad is broken as well so may as well get that fixed at same time so guess another £50. He has a desktop at home with R9 5900x and 1080 (can upgrade gpu I know) for games etc so just need portable machine. Questions are:-
1- Is this a fair repair quote for new mobo and is it worth going ahead with ? 8750h + 1050Ti are chips that would be on it. 16gb ram 512gb ssd but they can obviously be removed.
2- Is it possible to repair with downgrade to 9560(?) version without gpu so it is just usuable as a general purpose office laptop with no gpu ?
3- Any good places I can source the mobos myself and repair it ?
4- Best to bury this ewaste and buy new reasonable office laptop ?
If 4
I have been looking at B C grade options and I am drawn to a Lenovo Yoga 6 13" with 5500U 8gb ram version that can be had for around £400. What gets my goat about this is I cannot find out if this laptop has just 1 stick so only single channel. Similar problems with other laptops in this class.
If there are some good choices for general purpose B grade laptops in the sub £500 mark then pls let me know.
