Repeated "turn-offs"; temperature or PSU related?

Hi all, I recently ordered the Titan Fusion system here, and over the past two weeks it's been turning itself off with no prior warning or precedent.

It has turned itself off mostly when playing games, however I have had instances where it's turned itself off just browsing the internet. There was even a case where it turned off, and I immediately rebooted, went into the BIOS to check system temperature, whereby it turned itself off again!

I've got XP Pro 32-Bit installed as my operating system, and just FYI the CPU and System runs at ~46C and 33C respectively when idle. Another thing to note is that I have to take out the power lead and put it back in after a random shutdown in order to start the machine up again.

I will contact OCers directly, but I thought I'd make this thread anyway to see if any of you could give me an inkling of what's going on here, or what the most likely outcome will be. I suspect it's a PSU problem, since the system temperature seems normal- but it does seem to be related to system temperature since I have to leave it to "cool down" to reboot without crashing quickly again.

If its thermal, it'll boot and run normally for a while, then reboot. It will then run for rather less time before it reboots again.

Does it do this on stock settings/underclocked, and can you try it with a lower power graphics card? Reasoning being under less electrical load, a bad psu would run for longer before rebooting. Alternatively run furmark on it, if its psu related id expect it to reboot almost immediately.

I'm guessing you don't have a spare psu to try :(

Thanks for the reply! I actually tried to go into the BIOS to put it on stock settings, and it crashed again. I had left it off for an hour or so. I'm a bit scared to start it up AGAIN in case it fries my other hardware.

Basically, the time between switch-offs is getting closer and closer, it would seem. When it first switched off, the next switch off was a few days later - now it's multiple switchoffs in the same day. What are my options?

EDIT: That is, this is an overclocked system, I assume that it has been clocked to sensible limits and that I shouldn't need to alter my settings in order to maintain stability- if the system is shutting down even in the BIOS, this would suggest a problem with the hardware, and not the settings?

Power supply issues would usually result in a reboot - this sounds more like a failing bit of hardware. If you can get the rig up and running (even in BIOS), then try gently waggling all the various connectors, cards etc.

I'm also interested in the bit about unplugging - is this always true? That is, if you leave the rig for ten minutes after a shutdown, it won't boot; but if you immediately unplug etc, it will? This too would point at an intermittant short somewhere.

Have you tried the obvious: clearing CMOS?

It will not turn back on until you unplug it and replug the cable. Even more interesting- sometimes unplug / replug will not work until I swap power cables about! I have done this on several occassions. Each time I test it, the shutdowns get closer and closer. It's about to turn on for the last time in a few more tries. I've tried it using different power cables and different power sockets and I can only get about 15-20 secs. uptime, maximum.

I guess the best bet is check my guarantees / refund process or take it down the repair shop?

I can't see it being a heat issue, i mean thats not much of a overlock they sell it at, maybe its a fault with the psu or something else thats causing it.

As others have stated don't take it to a repair shop, if its newish it is still under the 1 year warranty.
