Replace 5770 with 6950 for BF3?

OK might sound stupid, but BF3 launch is a fair way off.

As you can see from my spec I'm still on my trusty Q6600. I'm going to play Crysis 2 and Portal 2 in the next few months, but BF3 is what I'm waiting for.

Should I spend the £190 now and get a 6950 or just wait till release? Am I going to get bottlenecking from my CPU if I do upgrade the GPU? I game at 1920x1200

Have you overclocked your CPU? Something at 3.4GHZ+ wont bottleneck with a 6950.

If I were you I'd wait closer to launch of BF3, but having said that I doubt the 5770 will do you any justice with Crysis 2 and Portal 2.

Was just about to ask admin to close the thread as I've made my mind up not to after trying Crysis 2 demo on hardcore settings with Vsync and actually being quite impressed with what the 5770 could handle...

This is the $1M question! I'm pretty sure it'll give me the excuse I've been waiting for, to upgrade from from my 4870x2 which has given me a good few years of service. I almost went for a 580/2x6950 just before xmas, but I really want to see what happens when AMD/NVIDIA swap to a smaller (28nm) manufacturing process. This usually brings a nice bump in performance that was sadly missing from the last refresh.
These cards should (and that might be a BIG should) be out before BF3 hits and by then there might be some benchmarks/ requirements available.
I suppose what I'm saying is, if you have loads of cash/ buring desire or need then upgrade and enjoy your new card which will undoubtedly play BF3 to some degree or another. Or, if like myself, you have limted cash and upgrade every 2/3 yrs and no game you currently play is causing you too much trouble, wait for 28nm and hope both sides can get the the party in time so you have a choice.
Nobody knows how much of CPU hog BF3 is going to be but you will probably start noticing some bottle necking in the future when you upgrade your GPU in some games.
I will do new CPU/GPU/MEM/MOBO when I upgrade in the summer and hopefully we should have some news on BF3 requirements and benchmarks by then.

They're using the same engine as bc2 aren't they? Probably best waiting to see what graphic cards we'll have later in the year. No doubt upgrading to sandybridge or even bulldozer will up the fps if it is the same engine though.

Good decision.

Portal 2 is just source engine btw, so i'm certain 5770 will be more than enough.

No. Frostbite 2, New engine.

oh new engine? I guess that makes sense since it actually looks something next gen would look like. I'm sure it'll be multi-threaded just like bc2 though.
