Always on the M1.....
Just getting my 5D Mark iii replaced under insurance policy, but it's obviously getting a little long in the tooth even though it's still a great camera.

I've seen the rumours about the 5Dx but there doesn't appear to be any sort of release date for definite, perhaps announced in Feb and released in April, though prices will be a premium and I won't be getting that much money from the insurance!

My other thought was to perhaps get a second hand 1d series camera for the same money-ish as I get back for my knackered 5Diii.

I did like the 5Diii, I use it mainly for people, some skiing stuff and a lot of travel pics and have plenty of good lenses. I want to stick FF. I'd be perfectly happy to get another 5Diii but I have an option perhaps for something else.

Any thoughts?

Cheers!

Sort of got used to the controls on the Canon! Having said that, bought a temporary RX100, so I guess it's all similar.

Must confess I'd never thought of using a Sony body with an EF lens, is this something you've done? Thought you were all Canon?

Supposed to be a good camera from what I've seen of it. Stabilised in camera is it not? Interesting to see how that works with the stabilised lenses, though suppose you just turn off the lens stabilisation.

I would say for what you shoot a 5DMK3 would be best for everything apart from perhaps the action of skiing. But even for that it has 6fps, which should be more than enough if you get your timing right. I shoot action all the time with a mk3 and its got plenty for what I need. I was shooting dog racing with it today and it easily kept up.

That would be my choice anyhow, its still a flipping fantastic camera!

I haven't done it, yet, mainly because it's too cost prohibative and make no sense to have a 4th body!

From what I've read the AF with an adapter is painfully slow so I'm not sure I'd really consider an a7ii if I was only going to use it with canon lenses! For me the a7ii will really come into it's own when sony release some native reasonably fast pancake primes the nearest so far being the 35mm f2.8 which I think would make a nice balanced setup.

Back to the OP given your canon investment and your like for the 5dmkiii I'd just get another it is a fantastic camera that you won't beat for the money in canon's line up.

I think i'm going to go with the 5D, like you've all said, its a fantastic camera and other than perhaps better weather sealing (which after taking a swim in a waterfall with mine was in my mind), there aren't really any significant benefits over the 1d Mkiv. Now if I could perhaps splash out the difference on the 1Dx.....

Don't know much about Canon, but just checked the prices of these. Certainly seem to have held up well for an almost 4 year old camera!

Not what i have heard. Most say its just as fast as on a Canon body.

With native lenses it is similar to a canon 5D, but not in cot I ious AF tracking. With an adapter using non-native lenses it is a long way behind, especially continuous AF.

impressive if true :) Still think the only time the a7 makes sense is using small primes otherwise the glass robs you of the size/weight savings anyway.

For me its the option of going small, the a7 with a small lens is small, a 5d with a small lens is still big. Plus image quality is as good as it gets, just other things let it down, im using MF a lot more recently though.

Hadn't really thought of it that way! I could already see myself heading down this route at some point in the future my 5d mkii seems to have a 35mm f2 permanently attached to it these days so a small full frame body with a compact 35mm prime would be a great replacement when I'm next in the upgrade cycle!

Which for me is a factor with the 5D vs 1D series - the 5D is bigger than say the Sony, but is dwarfed by the 1D series cameras. I had a grip on my old 40D and whilst it's nice for portrait photos and the extra battery life, it gets quite cumbersome when travelling. The 5D is just amount manageable, with the grip, the 40D was getting too big. And walking somewhere iffy with a big camera, just says "Rob me!"

Perhaps at some point in a couple of years, all my Canon lenses will be the same age and I can think about doing a wholesale change in body/lenses.
