Simple answer, overclock your cpu and/or gpu if you're finding performance not to your satisfaction. If it's still not good enough then just go for a new card. There will always be something new on the horizon, so imo that's a silly reason to hold off from upgrading. DX11 won't be anything special at the start anyway, just look at dx10 just now... hardly used at all yet.

First few waves of Dx11 cards are only going to be good for Dx10, just like the first waves of Dx10 cards were only good for Dx9 (and being bought for), so only reason to get a Dx11 card when they arrive is, if yours is struggling. :)

Well I too have an 8800GTX and a Dell 24”. To be honest, I’ve yet to come across any game that has made me have to drop any settings significantly to make any difference (Besides Crysis) and warrant paying out for a new one. I would just stick with what you got until it comes apparent that adjusting settings is becoming to common. This used to come around quite quickly on previous cards but the 8800GTX still keeps going. I'm playing FarCry2, COD5 and Left4Dead on highest settings..

I also agree with what loadsamoney says about the DX11 cards and compatable games etc..

Yes its only Crysis that I have any issue with all other games including COD5 seem to run like a dream but like any other PC builing person always on the look out for the next purchase to waste more money on

Will hold fire, thanks again

Enough said.

you should wait imo. i upgraded from a 8800gts 512mb to a gtx280 and i'm quite disappointed with the perfomance gains.

i wont be writing any cards off untill i see what they are capable of. we dont know anything about them and dismissing them at this point is foolish.

yep, them 8800gtx's are trash in dx10. its a good job we have 4870x2's eh?

it was the first dx10 games that were poorly coded, it wasnt a fault of the hardware. the fact that people are finding it hard to justify an upgrade from these gtx's playing current-day dx10 games is testiment to that.

If you have a strange and frenzied fetish for playing Crysis every day, then perhaps you should upgrade. For 90% of the games out there though, you do not need to upgrade. I don't really need to upgrade from my 8800GTX, but I do WANT to. :D

I would wait,if you happy with what you got, to be honest i do think if (most) people need to ask this then they don't really need to upgrade unless you been out of the loop for ages or new to building your own pc.
When your GTX starts to really struggle you soon notice it,at least if you wait the next cards will be more powerful and use less electric, well we hope :).
Edit;- it is tied to game engines and if and when they released and also the amount of games now what are made with the 360 in mind as well.

Another vote on the GTX - can't remember ever owning a card that has 'lasted' so well !
Mind you, I still use a 2005FPW so gonna be some time before the GTX 'needs' to go, I suspect :D

that said......me like shiny new cards from time-to-time......

Once I finally upgrade, I am going to keep my 8800GTX in reserve, as Supreme Allied Commander of the Territorial Armies, ready to be called up for service in times of need (in other words if I blow the new one up).

Click Here if you want to some of the best graphics cards benched in Crysis warhead.

Forget DX11 my friend, say it comes out at the end of the year along with the Graphics cards, it will be around another 6 months untill we actually get any games that can use it so i would stick with DX 10 / 10.1

Same situation, seriously considered the 280 and the 4870 but the performance increase isn't justified by the price, for me. Plus 8800 still plays all the games I play (Far Cry 2, TF2, L4D etc.) fine.

New cards around the middle of the year, I think, maybe then.

I can't see DX11 being worth much any time soon so I wouldn't let that influence your decision. If your 8800GTX is too slow and you see a good deal, then go for it.

Normally I would suggest considering buying a second 8800GTX for an SLI setup (works quite well due to the 768meg VRAM), but that's obviously not an option with the P45 chipset.
