Replace Motherboard on Windows 7?

Motherboard in sig died so I ordered a new mobo and CPU (P8Z68, 2500 + ram). I really don't want to reformat and re-install, I spent ages setting all my drives up but when I tried this on older windows there were always problems. I know a fresh install (like a fresh pair of underpants!) is always best but can I just plug the drives into the new motherboard when it arrives relatively problem free?

Been a while since I tried and windows 7 does seem a proper improvement.

If it's a retail version of Win7 then you will have no problems,if it asks to re activate then just do it over the phone if online does not work. It's all automated and will be fine.

If it's OEM then you're not supposed to but since your old mobo died and you've issued yourself a replacement you can just phone the number again and get a new activation key.

Simples!

I think he's asking about how well it would all work rather than the licensing aspect... I guess it largely depends on the specific hardware, although Windows 7 does seem more bulletproof than previous versions. It would probably have been better to uninstall any pre-existing drivers before doing the swap, but if the old motherboard is dead that's presumably not an option.

You've nothing to lose by giving it a go; if it all works OK then fine, if not you'll have to do it the hard way (stating the flipping obvious I suppose).

I've droned on enough in other threads about how I don't see any contractual barrier to swapping a motherboard in an OEM Windows computer, so I won't repeat it here... oh wait, I just did. :D

If that's it then it should be fine as I have done 3 mobo upgrades on this win7 install and no problems :p

Yes mobo died so I can't uninstall drivers, can I uninstall the old drivers after I install the new chipset drivers?

It is actually an OEM Windows 7, I forgot about that - have there been problems re-activating OEM? :(

There is no problem, when the automatic voice asks how many machines this copy is installed on, just select 1 and you will get a new key.

Make it work with ur new mainboard......then FORMAT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD !! lol

I have not changed my mainboard etc and didnt format for 2 years, I just got around to it again and its like a new machine, SO Much faster now.

Correct disk alignment results in better performance too so when you first formatted 2 years ago your alignment would have not been 4k whereas now it is. Either that or you didn't really maintain it that well :p

There is nothing like a reformat and a fresh install on a new motherboard to make a system sing.
