Hi everyone,

Well I last posted here in 2009...
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/check-my-spec-for-a-1k-quiet-pc.17997101/

And I still have that PC and used it semi-regularly until a year ago, but it has now pretty much given up the ghost.

I now need a new desktop which will be used for:
a) Daily office work,
b) Coding and compiling, and reasonably heavy data manipulation.
c) Playing FPS games.

I guess c) will determine the spec. But I need it to be quiet when doing a), it doesn't need to be quiet while doing b) or c) but happy to spend to make it quieter.

My monitor is as old as my PC so I guess I need a new one of those too.

I couldn't care less what it looks like inside or out. Happy to keep (or not) the Antec P101 case from old PC, that doesn't seem to have changed much in 10 years!

I am happy to build it, or buy it. But I'd rather end up with a good rounded spec that is reasonably future proof and leave it rather than keep upgrading.

I can spend £3k if needs be including monitor.
I don't have loads of time to do loads of research.

Any help would be really welcome

TP

That's an extremely healthy budget.

Something like this would be an idea:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,464.53 (includes shipping: £14.70)

The graphics card is a stand in, Nvidia is due to launch their new 3000 series next month and I'd highly recommend getting one of those and selling the 1650. The 1650 wont be up to snuff for a 1440P/165Hz monitor, but you'll get much better value for your money picking up a 3070 or 3080 in October or early November than you would buying an existing high end card.

I've specified an M-ATX build with Wi-Fi, not sure if you need that or not but it's easy to change form factor etc if you'd rather.

1tb NvME is a decent amount but obviously there's a lot of room in your budget to add more storage.

I don't know how many threads you use when working, the 3700X is an 8c16t CPU but if you can make use of more you could bump up to a 3900 or even 3950X processor.

You could build this yourself or ask OCUK to do it for you, they'll charge a fee for the work but you'll have the benefit of getting a full system warranty through them.

@Gray2233 you lost your marbles? 30 series launches next week :p Where are you getting Oct/Nov from? I wouldn't wanna use Crucial P1 NVMe, to last another decade when it's QLC.

If you want the system to last anywhere close to another 10 years, get a bunch of cores/threads, a solid GPU and good amount of RAM imo... so I'd go for the below personally.
  • Buy 3900X CPU elsewhere for £400
  • GPU not in basket, get a Nvidia RTX 3080 - due to launch next Thursday 13th, have to be quick ordering as stock expected to go fast...
  • Monitor not in basket, I'd recommend the new Dell S2721DGF (sold directly) can get it for about £331 with NHS/Student discount code. It's IPS panel, 1440p res, 165Hz refresh rate and has G-Sync. There's a huge thread here on the display, i got one recently and love it.
  • nvme if 1tb is enough great. if you'd like 2tb i recommend the adata xpg sx8200 pro (currently on sale for £210 elsewhere, ocuk don't stock adata)
  • great aio with good thermals/noise
  • extra 140mm fan is for the front with 1 pre-installed so have 2, so you can front-mount the aio and have a push/pull config setup on the aio rad.
  • spent £10-20 more on the psu to get rmx model, better jap capacitors over the rm for reliability and help with that 10 year warranty
assuming you got the cpu cheaper, 3080 gpu ordered, dell monitor mentioned, upgrade nvme to the 2tb if needed - you're looking approx £2200.

@Sparx The 3070 is October, The 3080 and 3090 are supposedly lauching around the 17-21 of this month but I'll be interested to see how stock holds up.

Not sure why but I thought the P1 was TLC, my bad!

b) ... reasonably heavy data manipulation.

Tell us more about this. What software do you use? How large are your datasets? This will tell us which CPUs and what sort of storage to recommend.

My monitor is as old as my PC so I guess I need a new one of those too.

You should be looking at a high refresh-rate 3440x1440 monitor like the £400 Iiyama. Keep your existing monitor as a secondary.

But I need it to be quiet when doing a),

Take a look at the Bequiet Dark Rock Pro and Noctua DH-15 CPU coolers. Air coolers do not have the pump noise that AIO coolers do.

What @Quartz has mentioned.

Software, whether using multiple cores being better or if it only uses fewer were speed/brute power is key.

AIO or actually CLC, most being mixture of copper and aluminium are bad for long life span as well as some brands not using correct fluids getting creep/micro build ups etc . Anyone that has a CLC mixed metal unit should cut it up after 3/5 years

QLC , TLC have their places . Personally happy to use Samsung QLC . I replace my SSD before their lifespan /warranty due to filling it up ! Then grab a bigger drive and move it over . But that's just me

Thanks for all the replies already - you guys are great.
Data manipulation is mixture of things, these days generally Excel connected to large datasets held on servers, although more of that going on server side these days. Probably most non-gaming heavy duty work is writing software (mostly C#) - compiling and running automated tests, some of which are effectively simulating what will happen on servers when deployed. Also some statistical model build using R, SAS or Python. Most of this stuff is well optimised for multi-threading.
I don't need loads of storage though, fast more valuable than big.

This PC doesn't need to last like the last one did, I have had a few surface pros since I built the last desktop. But I don't have the time to tinker, so I will work it til it's not good enough then retire it all and move on.

Seeing as I will use this for gaming as well the budget should be incl VAT probably...

Couple more questions from me:
Can I expect to be able to get a machine to run near silent when not under load? or will the 3080 (which looks great, sounds like the right time to be doing a new build) be permanently noisy?
Any reason not to keep my current case?
10 years ago Good quiet CPU fan was quieter than watercooling - sounds like that is still the case then?

Is there anyone who builds PCs to this sort of spec (crucially including caring that it is quiet) to order? I found QuietPC, but their markups do seem pretty significant...

Thanks again for all your help

OCUK will build the PC for you for a modest fee.

Cases like the Fractal Design Meshify have better airflow. Your Antec has a solid panel in front - it's difficult to get air through that. Something else you can do now that you could not do before is put the PC at a distance. You can get 10m fibre-optic video and USB cables (but they cost lots).

Add a RTX 3080 when it comes out, and you'll probably want a few extra fans.

You might find it useful to buy two monitors and stack them.

as above, ryzen 3900 but with a quieter case then can be switched from airflow to silence for gaming with adding or removing installed panels. 20 seconds of your time and game on!

Aorus board is £170 odd, OCUK charging a lot compared to rivals so maybe can get them to price match and you should be able too buy without VAT . Dont need wifi the non WIFII version is £150
Monitor above iis solid with IPS- better viewing angles . VA tend to have better colour. Gigabyte version is VA and G-sync enabled. not sure iif the G-Master is, or will be. worth finding out !

and then intel. Depending on compiling used / how you set it up too take advantages of threads/cores but linking is still done via single thread. Could brute strength with Intel..

like for liike costings

Daniel great, sensible price, asked him to build it, he said ring sales to place order, can't get through to sales, message them to say please call me to take my money, they say

"I'm afraid not, due to the volume of incoming calls. Sorry for any disappointment."

They literally don't want my money.

Most likely because it's after rtx 3080 launch . Anything before would have been fine . All resellers have crumbles due to RTX 3***

Give it a couple of days, the RTX firestorm will have calmed down, and the OC team will help you, I'm sure. Not only do they want your money, they want to provide you with a great system.
