hi
I am sick of crossfire now i give up with it, shadow of mordor has no crossfire support, so i am looking for another card is the gtx 980 the one to go for,
i know my 7990 will beat it when crossfire profile is out but it takes weeks after release of game for it to work.
i was thinking of buying 1 980 then getting another a few months later as i heard sli is better than crossfire atleast if the sli is not working straight away 1 980 is a lot faster than 1 7970 thats what i am running till crossfire profiles come out.

my current system
windows 7 64bit pro
ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3
Intel Core i7 2600K Antec h20 920 cooler
16gb corsair vengance
Radeon msi 7990

thanks

No reason to upgrade sli profile for shadow of mordor wasn't there at release either and you usually have to wait longer with sli support. force xfire on CCC or just wait for a bit it's not going to hurt you.

Yeah i know what your saying your right, i just like to buy the games on release day and play them straight away, i am just impatient and sick of having to wait on crossfire profiles..

tbh you'd be better with a single, higher end card. If you don't like crossfire then SLI is surely going to be the same thing, whether it's slight 'better' or not.

ok it may not be as quick as a dual GPU but you won't have the hassle of trying to get things to work.

What size is your monitor?

monitor is a 27" 1440p
newer games are using more gpu ram for ultra textures ie shadow of mordor, so will i have to but another 980 later on to play on ultra?
i know sli is same problem as crossfire but 1 980 is twice as quick is 1 7970 what i am using at present.
thanks

the 980 destroys the 7970

Doesn't matter how many 980s you buy, the VRAM will still only be 4GB just like the 7990 is only 3GB. You'd have to buy a 8GB card but tbh unless your running 4k resolution I don't see it really being worth it.

My 970 overclocked happily pushes over 120 fps in BF4 on High settings at 2560x1080. Thats the smaller brother of the 980.

I think you'll be quite surprised at the performance of a 980 tbh

am confused now lol, thought my 7990 had 6gb of memory
so if i put 2 980 in sli i will only have 4gb?
thanks

I just noticed that there is a beta driver out already just after the 14.9 WHQL and there are particular references in the known problems and fixes towards the 7990.

■Users of dual AMD Radeon™ HD 7990 in AMD Crossfire™ mode should completely uninstall older versions of Catalyst™ drivers from "Add/Remove Programs" in Windows Control Panel before installing the AMD Catalyst™ 14.9.1 Beta. If users of this graphics configuration are still having issues after taking these steps when installing the AMD Catalyst™ 14.9.1 Beta please use the AMD Catalyst™ 14.7 drivers .
■Some users may find that their graphics product is not currently being supported by the AMD Gaming Evolved Application. We encourage those users to visit http://raptr.com/ to download the latest client or for information on when the application will be available to them.

thanks for this will try it out.

I'm not saying you shouldn't upgrade, but have you tried making a CCC profile for shadow of mordor and using the Lost Planet 2 DX11 xfire preset?
Also, ultra textures really don't make much or any real difference IMO.

yeah i have tried most profiles, strange thing is on the mordor game benchmark it comes out stupidly high, but ingame it stutters and the menus are messed up.
so i am running with 1 core. and to top it off its just lost my 15hr saved game..

hi

i made my mind up getting rid of my 7990 give up with crossfire,

either getting

2 gigabyte gtx 970 g1 or 2 msi gtx gamer

or

1 gtx 980 gigabyte g1 or 1 msi gtx 980 gamer adding a second in december when i get some more cash.
what do you think i should go for?
is there much differance between msi and gigabyte ones or is there a better option.?

thanks for help

Thanks rtho782 - very helpful and informative. I have a 4k monitor so wanted a boost for the GPU horsepower required for 4k but with your experience it may not be worth it or see a difference. I only have an 850W PSU too so will be short on juice.

Maka12 - I'd go for 2x970's as they OC to within an inch of a stock 980 so essentially you'd have 2 x stock 980's for a tad over £500 G1's or the MSI's both great clockers. Dpends on the cards but both MSI & G1's are reported to exceed stock 980 performance by a smidge.

If you dont game at 4k the 980 option is also good with adding another later for a monster rig.

Good luck.

hi
Just bought a msi gtx 980 gamer, will prob add another later on.
thanks
