Replace or upgrade my HP HDX beast?
I guess I'm the same as most people on here in that I like to tinker, upgrade or buy complete new systems on a (semi) regular basis but should i be looking to change my current laptop for something else or upgrade it slightly?
I currently have a HP HDX Dragon, specs are:-
Core 2 Duo T8100 (2.1GHz, 3Mb L2 cache)
GeForce 8800GTS 512Mb
20.1" 1920x1200 screen
3Gb DDR2 SDRAM
2 x 160Gb 5400rpm HDD
DVDRW lightscribe
Intel WiFi 4965AGN
Bluetooth
Windows 7 Pro x64 (was shipped with Vista HP x64)
9 cell battery (on its way out!)
Card reader, digital TV tuner, fingerprint reader, HDMI, eSATA, firewire.....(all not used by me and unessential)
As you can tell by the HDX my basic critera are that this is purely a Desktop Replacement laptop due to space constraints, i play some games (Steam stuff like TF2, CS:S, may get the new CoD game etc), bit of video encoding, battery life and obviously portability is not important. I would like at least a 17" screen and a 1920x1200 resolution is preferable.
The Dell Studio XPS 16" with the RGBLED sounds good (i could maybe go 16" with a top notch screen) although i'm not sure the ATI Radeon HD4670 1Gb its fitted with is as fast as the 8800GTS in mine, I might have to ask some Studio XPS owners to run a few versions of 3DMark and compare it against mine as they will likely have faster CPU's / chipsets etc.
So cutting to the chase....
What better replacement laptop could I buy for around £1000 give or take?
Is the ATI HD4670 on a par with the 8800GTS in general?
Is the i7 CPU (quad core?) worth the upgrade over a Core 2 Duo?
How much do you think the HDX is worth as it stands (i would return it to Vista HP x64 and not replace the battery (£50-60 to replace)) if i was to ebay it?
If i was to keep the HDX I would upgrade the OS HDD to a SSD, probably an Intel X25-M 80Gb. I'm not sure it would be worth changing the 3Gb to 4Gb RAM and there isnt much else that could be upgraded easily.
