My Volvo is shortly to go to the giant car park in the sky. (massive oil leak that no garage is willing to fix/uneconomical to repair).

So its replacement car time. Budget is 5k, I drive about 10k miles a year. I'm after something cheapish to maintain and run. So before I go out and get my self another Mondy, any other suggestions of cars to take a look at? I'd like something with a bigger boot than the Volvo had, it was teeny, and my climbing gear barely left room for the weekly shopping.

Bah....got halfway through your post thinking "Mondeo" before you said you'd already considered it :p

I don't know much about them, but they get mentioned here a fair amount...Skoda Octavia?

Snobery has stopped me even considering them. Will take a look, only experience with them was a friend which was very plasticky inside.

Nobody can fix an oil leak?

No one will fix the oil leak. It will require removing the engine and my local garages are refusing the work. One quoted over 1k to fix it, but then said they wouldn't do it anyway. All the others refused to even quote.

is it the crank seal or something??

Unfortunately I'm not sure... something about sump tank, and then another leak which I can't remember at all where they said. In general its at an age where parts just like to fail, and I'm not particularly mechanical minded, so its getting pricey to keep it on the road (though I've learnt to replace fuel injectors, and various sensors over the last year). I was intending to replace it once I got to 200k miles, which would have been mid-late 2014 anyway.
