replaced old ide burner with SATA but it doesn't show up in windows?

Burner seems to be recognised in bios and it spins etc when a disk is put in and it also shows up in device manager as working yet it doesn't have a drive letter in windows 7 is this normal? Should I have to mount the drive myself?
