hi all, was wondering how much of a difference would an x1800xt 256mb make over my 6800nu which is fully unlocked and clocked at 375/835?

I think you will see quite a bit of improvement. Considering X1800XTs are quicker stock than a 7900GT you will get some good results!

X1800XT and your opteron should do very nice ;)

A few days ago I upgraded from my 6600GT to a x1800XT and I have seen some huge differences! However mine is the 512mb version but I don't think there is too much difference between them.

What games do you play? The greatest difference it will make is with the newer ones.

I hope that helps a bit :)

not a huge amount of difference but it will be faster. also AA + HDR,...
LOL you must be joking, I've had a 6800nu (clocked at 450/900), 6800GT past ultra speeds a 6800 ultra and the x1800xt will absolutly murder these cards, its over twice the performance of the 6800nu overclocked to hell, massive difference mate you cant compare them, I couldnt even run the 6800nu some games with high details as it would go like 1fps at a time because of lack of ram (I game at 1680X1050), when I got a card with 256mb ram this problem was fixed, due to this alone the difference is massive.

Benchmarks show on current games regardless of resolution and details there is no difference between 256/512, might be better for future games though.

hmm, is the x1800gto the same on performance as my current card?
Nah even at stock the x1800gto is far better than your card (its better than any old generation card i.e 6800ultra/x850xtpe), and the gto has a lot more potential todo well by unlocking pipes and overclocking adding volts via ati tool.

If it's agp that can partly be solved by uping the agp aperture size to 256mb :) . Helped a lot with my 6600gt 128mb

Get a 7900 GT,overclock it and pull ahead from the x1800xt.
No faffing with driver cleaner etc...
[offtopic]I think I'll take a page from your book and say "this thread is about 6800 to X1800, I don't know why you're talking about 7900s at all."[/offtopic]

As for the question at hand, the difference between a vanilla 6800 and an X1800XT is like night and day. :)

priceless!

LOL

first its delicious, now its night and day!

LMAO

anyway merely on topic,

The same money gets the OP a 7900 GT a more overclockable cooler solution. :p

But the x1800 upgrade from a 6800 is like a warm summer meadow with the sweet smell of dew on the grass :D

7900gt was my first choice but since the failure rate on them has exceeded the level set by the 9800pro cards i decided its best not to bother with nvidia this round.

the x1800xt is priced very well and i can get a x1800gto card for £100 inc vat so im wondering if thats the way to go.

unlocking wise the success rate is very poor from what i have read so far.

also the x1900gt is in an ok price point so not sure if the x1900gt is better than a x1800xt.

but for 100 quid the x1800gto is very tempting. just need someone the post up some links to reviews comparing it to a 6800gt so i can get a rough idea on what to expect.

right read some reviews and the 7600gt is better than the x1800gto so not gonna bother with that route. gonna see how the x1900gto fairs.

x1900xt is good card but price is too much. not willing to pay over 200 quid.

It'll be a lot better than a 6800gt, but in fairness these a preety big difference between a 6800gt and a 6800nu, you might score similar in benchies due to your overcock but this doesnt tell the full story as i realised when I changed my monito to 1680X1050 and using native res.

the change will be collosal mate, you wont be disappointed with a x1800xt

Just seen what cpu you have, a x1800xt will fly on that and could achieve over 10K with a tiny overclock, if your one of the lucky ones that doesnt get problems when overclocking the card past 690 due to driver errors you could easily get over 11K, in games though 10K gaming machine is fabolous I run oblivion on ultra high settings 1680X050 settings and its great - wish I had 2gb of ram though.

is that with stock cooling? i would not want to spend more money on an aftermarket cooler. what sort of temps does the stock cooler give?

Be Smart and get the 7900GT then
