Hi,

My rig is as below, only my graphic card has just gone belly up :(

Could I have a guide on what would be a suitable replacement, at a sensible budget?

Ta

200 will get you the same performance / slightly worse with a 4gb rx 480.

Wow, so even tho my last card cost me just over £200 2 years ago (my warranty expired one month before the card did), the same money now, won't even buy me the same performance? Am I better off just hitting the bay for a second hand card of the same spec then.

The pound has crashed by 20% so its not really the fault of AMD or Nvidia.

TBH,an RX480 or GTX1060 will be a slight performance increase over an R9 290(remember the R9 390 was slightly quicker than a R9 290),but if the pound had stayed the same the RX480 8GB and GTX1060 6GB would have been around £200.

Cheers for all the advice guys, think maybe I'll look for a 1060, see what I can find. If I go for a new card, what's a decent manufacturer to opt for regarding warranty?

Just realised the OP had an R9 290X not an R9 290 - with later driver updates the R9 390X was trading blows with a GTX980,so I assume an aftermarket R9 290X is not much slower.

An upgrade isn't really my main aim, I just need to get a card that'll perform close to what my now dead r9 290 did, and will match the rest of my rig. I'm not looking to invest in a card that I would carry on to my next build, when I upgrade my current rig, I'll upgrade the gpu along with it.

Just get a used 980 or 390 then...a 480 sold in MM for 199

New the 1060 aint worth the money...

Youre current rig will last a good while yet...so you might aswell upgrade!

I don't understand your logic.

I would get a non-reference RX470 4GB as a temp card then if you intend to update your entire rig at some point. Quite close to a reference RX480 8GB in many games.

The Powercolor Devil RX470 4GB has been offer on twice for between £165 to £170 in the last few weeks.

Edit!!

Having said your rig is half reasonable,so my view is to either just get a cheapish replacement card or get a far better card.

Second Edit:

Here is a review:

Cheers, I was actually thinking that my rig may need upgrading sooner rather than later, maybe there is a little more life left in it.

The 1060 is not enough of an upgrade really...

Its slightly slower than a 4GB 980

Barely anything in it, I've had both can't tell the difference and also depends on the game.

Getting a used 980 would be the best value though, they go for pretty cheap like £150? And will be faster than a 290X in most things.

If you can't use the members market then the AV Forums is also worth a look on their classifieds section.

Find a second hand replacement, I sold an as new condition, boxed 4gb MSI 290x gaming for £130 over a year ago on the MM, Admittedly it ran hot and was priced accordingly but the point is you can get a replacement for a good price if you look around, A secondhand 8gb 390 or 390x should be in your budget so I'd go for one of those if you won't go over 200 for an 8gb 480. I wouldn't go for a new 4gb card though.
