Right finally accepted my original xbox has now died and on Dannys advice i gather i am best off replacing than repairing.
Unlike Danny though i do not have a money tree growing in my garden so want to know your guys thoughts on best options. I only have the harddrive that came with original (20gig??) so:
1. Do i accept getting an arcade just to get me back in the game or wait and get a more recent model?
2. If i was to get a new model, and excuse my ignorance, would it be easy to transfer from my original harddrive to however the newer one comes?

As much as i have got plenty of recordings on my sky + it will soon get boring without the one thing that really does pie off the wife!!

Cheers in advance!

Find a supermarket with the old Elite in stock and get one of them for Circa £130.

New 3 year warranty on them bad boys too (even if it doesn't RROD but something else goes just send it back stating RROD)

if you do get the new ones you can get a usb cable to transfer stuff to the new xbox, one bit of advise, dont get the 4GB one, get the bigger one, it may be more expensive but you cant upgrade the hard drive on the new ones. THis does however mean that your buying the most expensive version there is so maybe stick to an arcade or old elite

That is exactly what I'd do, get an older spec elite, have the warranty and more hard drive space for £50 less than the cost of a new spec model.

You can get a transfer cable or there might even be someone on here willing to lend you one.

I wouldn't worry about chipsets anything you buy from the shops these days will be fine. I'm off work tommorow and will see what prices I can find you. If you get desperate I have a spare at competitive rental rates ;)

thanks mate though the offer of renting will not be taken up...........the psycho is now getting about so the last thing i would want to do is put him in the vicinty of your property!!

Ok mate fair point, you would end up buying two new ones then ;)

Just treat yourself to a new slim, you deserve it.
