Replacement card slightly different and not working

My MSI twin frozer iii 7950 stopped giving out signal after 3 months and I had it returned. MSI found a fault and gave the shop a credit note to send me a new one which I received today.

I have installed the new 7950, the fans are spinning but the card is not doing anything and is not being recognised in device manager when I use onboard VGA.

What is unusual about the replacement is that my old 7950 OC had 2 6 pin pci-e slots but this version has an 8 pin and a 6 pin pci-e. It also has V2 on it which suggests it is improved. Luckily I have a 6+2 pin connection I put in together.

When at first it did not show signal I downloaded the 12.7b driver which installed correctly but the graphics card still did not work. I went back to on board and device manager showed no card in PCI-E and there is nothing in the bios to suggest the card is in.

I have a 550w corsair vx550w psu which is more than enough.

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

is there ``no signal`` on the monitor.... just a black screen ? if so; is the keyboard dead too, because if both are not responding then it looks like the card is dead ...

this is exactly the same as when mine broke... the pc is totally dead until you remove the card and shove the HDMI into the onboard socket instead, then the pc fires up perfectly !

the fans on the card still spinning means nothing, card is probably still dead

Any beeps when it boots up with the graphics card in? Does the motherboard show any errors? Sometimes there is a led in the area of the fault on the motherboard.

There are no beeps apart from the startup beep and the LED near the PCI-E slot lights up in order to say everything is ok.

The screen is not all black, it has the no signal when I put my monitor to display DVI whilst the DVI cable is attached to the 7950. As soon as I put the DVI connection into the on board slot the screen shows up as normal. The card is just not detected.

I am going to have to send it back again if this cannot be figured out but what are they going to think? I have honestly done what I am supposed to do, treating the card with the utmost respect, wearing an anti static band the whole time, holding it only on the underside and not touching the PCB.

It is also frustrating as it isn't exactly cheap to post it recorded delivery either. What are the chances I would be allowed to exchange to a new card rather than another replacement?

I hope that there is a simple solution though, it would be unbelievable if this one is dead as well, especially as it was new and not a refurbished one.

it sounds like the card is dead.... almost definitely

if you get the ``no signal`` and no card is detected via the pc, then it's probably dead, especially if you keep retrying it, which i guess you already have

sometimes it works if you remove it from the PCI slot and replace it again, or if you download new drivers etc, but not if it still doesn't work and you've been trying all afternoon.

Success and one awkward phone call averted.

I had pressed in the 2 power connectors many times so I figured they are ok but as a last resort I unscrewed the plate, took the card out of the PCI slot with the power connectors still in so I could have a closer look and it turns out the 2 separated connectors on the 6+2 were not connected properly. I put them in properly and it now works fine under the 12.6 drivers and achieved an identical score to my old card on 12.3 in heaven benchmark.

So it all looks to be sorted. Thanks for your help.
