Hi

I have a 2009 GT Avalanche 1.0 that i haven't used in about 5 years. In my last use i snapped the chain and haven't touched it since.

I don't have the chain so need a replacement. How do i find out what kind/size i need? and where can i buy it from?

thanks,

Chains are determined by the number of gears your bike has, which I believe is nine in this case. So you'd be looking for pretty much any 9 speed chain. Price doesn't really matter - you won't get more out of a more expensive chain - as long as it's from KMC, SRAM or Shimano. You can buy them online or in a local bike store, where you might expect to pay a little more. But for example;

You'll likely need a chain tool to shorten the chain to the correct length out of the box. I'd also beware of why your chain might have snapped in the first place - check the drivetrain for anything stuck between the gears like a screw or a stone, and depending on how much you rode it before then I might also consider changing the cassette. To do this yourself you'd need a chain whip, a cassette tool and an adjustable spanner or right sized non adjustable spanner... or ratchet. I've done it with cheap tools from ebay before, depends how much money is a factor for you.
