Replacement for 6800GT

My Leadtek 6800GT died last night, and I'm really not in the financial position to purchase a new rig for a PCI-E graphics card.

I was wondering what would be the best aternative card in the agp range, hopefully offering similar performance to the 6800GT (I haven't been keeping up with technology, so I have no idea on what to choose).

On the other hand, i'm thinking that it would be best to buy a really cheap agp card, and slog it out until I can afford a new rig and a pci-e card. Which one sounds like a better idea?

The comp itself is pretty dated- 3500+ Athlon I believe, or something like that.

Before even thinking of purchasing the above card could you please tell us your PSU specs please?. It wouldn't be a good thing if you got the card and it wouldn't boot up or started crashing due to a lack of power under load.

But its a lot of money for what it is.

a lot faster than the 6800GT though!

That looks great, but yeah, it's a bit too dear for me. It's a nice starting point though for my search though.

It's an Antec 500W psu.

What sort of games would you want to play?

Mainly source-based engine games at the moment. I only play on Garry's Mod these days, and a bit of TF2. Bioshock didn't like my card much!

id just go with something like that until you can afford a new pc

not much point in spending loads of money an an agp card in my opinion.

Price-wise, that doesn't look too bad. Is it worth pushing for a 7600GS instead? I think I can get one for about 20 pounds more or so.

The 2600XT or 3650 (DDR3 version)...both can be had for around 50-65 if you look.

The 2600XT has a higher core clock, but the 3650 has a higher memory clock if you get the DDR3 version. However, I recommend the 3650 as it runs cooler and you should be able to overclock it to over 800mhz quite easily.

If you get either one of these cards I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results, they are not particularly fast cards...but should be a more than significant upgrade from a 6800GT

Indeed, but I suspect buying a new CPU, RAM and motherboard + a PCI-E card would be much more costly and inconvenient.

Anything short of a x1950 Pro or the card easy suggested is going to be a sideways move imho. Isn't a 6800 GT about as fast as a 7300 GT?

No. 7300GT struggles to match the 6600GT. 7600GS is slower than the 6800GT, the 7600GT is about that level, slightly higher.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll be looking into getting a 3650 or a 3850, although I'll have to stretch my budget for the latter. To be fair, I don't mind spending that much on the card, consdering how much the 6800 originally cost me.
