a freind is buying my old pc and i am building a new one.whats the best cad to replace my 8800gtx.i am thinking of atis new x2 cards.i have a 24 inch screen and like as much detail in games as possible.cheers..

Id say just get another GTX, only £176 now, and GX2's are not worth buying as there life is over in July, single 9900 GTX is coming then which is faster.:)

the 9800gx2 seem a bit expensive. is the expence worth it over the ati x2 cards.i am willing to stump up the cash but just want to make sure i get the best for my lolly. cheers...

i dont realy want another 880gtx as this will be a new pc and i wont have the cash to buy a new gpu for a while.so its got to last a while.when i went from an ati x800 to a 7800gtx i was a little bit dissapointed whith the image quality but very suprised with the exra power.thats whats giving me thoughts of getting a x2 card.are the x2 cards much of an upgrade from a 8800gtx...

Nothing really compares with the 8800GTX as a single card solution, and it's still plenty powerful, even for the res you're prolly looking to run at (1920x1200 or so i think). Wait for the real next gen. In the meantime, stay with the 8800GTX.

although an ATi HD3870X2 is not bad, but will cost more

If you want something that is different and a little bit faster than your GTX then go for the X2. It's not leaps and bounds faster but it's got more grunt to it.

Am I right to think that the GTX is already sold along with the rest of your old system?.

yes thts right my mate wants my pc.its a x2 4800 2 gig of ram 8800gtx .i am selling it to him at a good price but he has no idea when it comes to pcs and just wants something that does the job .the thing is he wants it as it stands.so i need a new gpu for my new pc.i am going for a 8400 or a 9450 and 4 gig of ram and plan to oc a bit.so although i am not against another 8800gtx i would like to feel the gpu has had a good upgrade.i suppose it comes down to the fact that in the past i have had to upgrade bits at a time and now have the chance to build a pc from scratch and upgrade as i can afford.

i don' really think there's much that will really feel like an upgrade for you. The 8800GTX is a great card, and maybe only the GX2 will actually feel like an upgrade but that would be a waste if you ask me. i'd get a stop gap card, something like an 8800GT or 9600 then go for the proper next gen when they appear. Since its not meant to be long there's little point in buying anything expensive now.

Ah nice one. He'll be happy as it's a good system. I hope he has a screen capable of at least 1680x1050 as he will be pretty CPU bound if that X2 4800 is at stock.

The X2 isn't miles faster and it's game dependant. In some titles you could be seeing 30-60FPS more than you would with your GTX. Then you could see a few games being not a lot different as well as the odd one or two that the GTX felt that little more responsive. The X2 however has taken decent leaps with driver releases so it still has potential to get better. I'm not talking by a lot here but that odd game where the GTX is neck and neck or infront could become a thing of the past. A few people have went from the GTX to the X2 and have felt the power difference and are happy with it. There response is either "it's a lot faster" or "it just plays games flawlessly like the GTX".

So I see it as you won't be dropping performances. Some of the same in a few games and faster in others.

Not good for a 24" screen as the GTX or X2 would be :).

hadnt realy thought of that but its a great idea. as my dads pc is stuggling with his flight sims.buy a stop gap sell it cheap...ish to my dad and be first in the que for the next gen for a change.cheers for that.

If you are willing to drop your resolution to about 1440x900-1680x1050 then it's a very good option. My screen can go to 2048x1536 and I wouldn't like to drop resolutions too much. I do with my screen till it's silky smooth but it's always high. Too small starts to look not as nice I feel.

i just talked to my dad on the phone and he said he will have what ever card you guys reccomend to me of off me in a few months.so how does this sound i get an ati x2 and sell it to my dad when the new cards come out.good old dad will give me a good price for it. i hope..

A bit of a pain the *** this is going to be for you but could you give us your dads PC spec's please?. I think it would be best to get a card for yourself that won't be wasted on your dad's machine. There is no point in him forking out more than he would if it were a cheaper card if any of it will be wasted. Could you include the monitors resolution as well please?.

thanks my dads pc is a core duo mid range not to sure which one, 2 gig of ram, and i am not sure of the gpu.i know it handles flight sim fx on his 19 nch widescreen at low to medium settings ..

stukacat, just get a 8800GT for the time being, theres really is no point wasting money on anything else, plus it will be allot easier on your dads system as the 8800GT is alllot smaller then 8800GTX/3870X2 and uses allot less power but still provides great performance.
