Hi. I've had a Dell XPS PC for 3 years or so that I've used for video games. It had an 8800GTX which recently sort of melted. Would you guys recommend buying another one or would there be a better alternative for the same price? I'd be willing to spend up to $190/£120.

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem. I would get a better case first. Eg. Asus vento is the one i chose.
After that i would get a 5670/5770 but the best for around £140 is a gtx 460

The GTX 460 looks good but I'm not sure if I'm willing to get a new case... Could there have been cooling problems because the PC was pressed up against a wall?

As long as there is a reasonable gap eg 5cm then it shouldnt melt. If you still have warranty then dell will replace it for free. If not i have my old 8800GTX lying around and i would sell it to you for a third of the price of a 460. The dell ase has rubbish cooling so i would maybe add another fan or two next to the card. If you do get a 460 it may come to the same end unless you do something to improve the cooling.
You will probably jave to reapply the TIM frequently and this will void your warranty unless you buy an EVGA card

I appreciate the offer but I'm thinking of getting a HD5770 now. Is this considerably better than the 8800GTX?

Also, would I be adding fans to the case or the card? I don't really understand how I'd improve the cooling situation.

1) the 5770 is better by quite a bit.
2) you would put a fan on the case blowing onto the card and this would cool the card down because the airflow inside the XPS 420 case is rubbish.
Make sure the graphics card you get has a good cooler.

Okay, I think that's about all the information I need. Thanks a million, I really appreciate your help. Graphics cards are needlessly complicated in my opinion.
