My spare PC uses an old 9800pro AGP, or did until went into melt down over the weekend.

Im looking to get a replacement which is at least as fast as the 9800, is AGP because I dont want to upgrade the entire system and is cheap.

I have looked at some of the AGP cards on ocUK and the nVidias look a bit expensive but there are several ATI cards around the £50 mark but Im not sure if those are as quick as the 9800 pro.

Can anyone pass on any advice as to which i should go for?

Thanks for your help.

Right, the first link is an OK card but has only 256mb of RAM. The card underneath has 512mb RAM but it's £100 and the X1950Pro is the best card but slightly more dearer.

The Nvidia at the bottom link is also hitting the £100 mark.

In all honesty any of the cards in the links will beat your 9800Pro by a fair margin. I haven't listed the DDR2 AGP cards as I've heard nothing but bad news about them. So it looks like you'll be having to pay a little more that £50 to get your card but it should be nearly 3-4 times more powerful than your 9800. (You can try the DDR2 cards but I can only relate experience and from what I've read their not the best but you never know - wait for someone else to comment on these DDR2 cards)

You might have to upgrade your PSU also :(.

For those prices you may as well consider an AGP 3850, I'm not sure when they're due, but they've been announced and will hopefully be shipping soon if not already. As for speed, the 3850 should be around 4 times faster than a 9800, if not more

The 9800Pro is on par with the 6600GT... I think the tiniest bit slower however...

If you are looking to pay around the £50 for an equivalent, then you are selling yourself short... These days, that kind of performance, you should be talking more of your £30 max level to be honest.

£50 I would expect much better than the 9800Pro.

However... I too have a 9800Pro in one of my systems and I have no intention of upgrading that PC as it does what I need it to do just fine... If you want a 9800Pro and are willign to fork out £50 then you are welcome to have mine.

In a kind of selling point, its in a spare PC that is only ever used by my daughter for playing Little Mermaid and has done the occasional UT2004 but it has never been pushed and has about 10 hours use out of it since new,

LOL

i would be looking at second hand looking at those prices on ocuk. something like an x1650pro or 7600gs.

Look for some second hand ones. You can get a lot for your money like a 6600GT should be around £30 or less. a 6800GS for around £40 ish if you look around :)

I'd say a 6000GT is around twice as good as a 9800Pro. I remember selling my mini shuttle p4 3.0 Northwoord with a 9800Pro as I needed a full size PC. The A64 3200+ and 6600GT were hugely faster.

AGP 6600GT AGP cost a little more that the PCI-E version but make sure it is the GT version. The basic 6600 is probably more comparable to the 9800Pro and is cheaper still

No its not... The 6600GT is atiny bit faster but thats all it is.

I have a Saphire 9800Pro in a DFI LanParty 250UT Board and a BFG 6600GT in an MSI Neo2 Board, and both are AGP and in both PCs the CPUs are 512K Cache A64 CPUs and both are clocked to 2.5Ghz, and the 6600GT scores around the 55/56K mark in AM3 and the 9800Pro scores 51/52.

In all games, the frame rate is very much exactly the same too... UT2004 for example, giving me pretty much the very same 60-65 on both.

Scores all across the board, 3DMark2000, 2001, and 03 all show the same... We are talking about a 5% difference if that!

Not tried any later version of any benchmark programs but I will be more than happy to try anything in particular out.

Although in the 6600GT's favour, it does do PS3.0 and the ATI does not.
