Replacement for a GTX 470

I suspect my GTX 470 is dying and am looking for a replacement. My budget is ideally around the £150 mark but could be stretched to £200 if there was a substantial performance increase. I would prefer nVidia due to better drivers but could be persuaded to go Ati. Not sure if I need 2GB of ram but with games like BF3 it may be worthwhile. Most importantly I am looking for reliability due to my last 2 overclocked cards dying on me (I not going to overclock my new card).

I paid £180 for my GTX 470 and in just over one and a half years sadly there appears to be very little performance increase at the same price point.

Whats wrong with it? one of mine was having the odd problem with graphical corruption recently - after a year of playing Eve for hours each day it had built up a lot of dust inside and some parts weren't getting cooled enough (I suspect) cleaning that out solved it.

I have been having all sorts of intermittent issues which I suspect is due to the graphics card. Sometimes the bios does not load and often the PC hangs while loading windows. When in Windows the display driver usually crashes and recovers within the first 10 minutes of booting. The past day has been more serious in that Windows has started to hang instead of the display driver recovering. Oddly enough my PC becomes more stable the longer it stays on and playing games does not make the issues any worse. I may have no issues for 5 hours or so then it all starts off again.

I am not sure if the card still has a warranty and I can't remember where I bought it from - one of the few occasions that I have not bought from OcUK.

Try some simple troubleshooting first:
-reinstall the drivers
-Clean the card out
-reinstall windows

Also, IIRC, the 470 hasn't been out for 3 years. Depending on the manufacturer, they might let you RMA the card.

If you HAVE to replace it,wait a while for the next gen of cards

Have you got any other graphics card available (even from a friend?) to test if this is the exact cause of the problem?.

Also have you tried a stability test on your overclock for your CPU recently?. I'm only suggesting for the process of elimination, don't worry :D.

Check your motherboard for bios updates.

I had the same issues in my 790i. Basically it would sometimes load to a blank blue screen, or simply black. Then when it went to sleep it would not wake up.

Unless it is totally screwed don't get a 560. It's not an upgrade, it's pretty much what you have now. And if you're running 1680 it's wasted cash.

I will see if I can hang in there until next gen are released but there is strong chance I will have to replace it in the next week. I am certain it's not software as it at times plays up before the bios loads and I also dual boot into WinXP where I have the same issues.

My card is one of those 'unbranded' retailer cards with a one year warranty.

I have recently moved cities so I can't get my hands on one to try out. I am thinking about getting the cheapest card I can find to do some testing.

At his res it's a waste of money.

Boggy standard 560 GTX will do the job perfectly.
That's what I was starting to think, but the Msi in Guru's link is only £30 more than the cheapest 384 card and has a decent overclock with 2GB. I am so tempted but should really troubleshoot my PC with another graphics card first. It would be great if OcUK had a return policy like some of the US stores.

2GB you need like food now. It really pains me to say it, but with the direction games are heading in (and the fact that none are really optimised well for PC) it's becoming something you really must consider.

On my GTX 470 @ 755 linked shader BF3 stuttered at times. It just about managed to hold onto 1080p @ ultra in single player. I hear MP is a lot more demanding.

But it all comes back to Vram apparently. That was what made my mind up to go back to AMD with the Lightning, as it packs 2gb. If 1.2gb isn't enough then 2gb should cut it for a year.

My GTX 295 love Bad Company 2 (x2 quad)

They hated BF3. And the problem wasn't a lack of raw power (as the 295s have that in abundance) or quad scaling (because Frostbite 2 will take anything you can give it) it was the sodding Vram. I would literally get areas pause for a few seconds whilst it buffered into the 896mb Vram.

1gb is not enough any more. Well, not for super hi res games with uber textures like C2 and BF3.
