Guys,

A friend with not a lot of spare cash needs to replace an 8800 GTX which has become faulty.

Could any one recommend a used replacement for around £30-40? I was thinking maybe something like the GT 650?

I've not looked at budget cards for a long time...

I looked at a few GTX 960's on eBay, but they look to be out of his price range. His budget is very limited.

But the wanted section is a good shout.

Cheers.

Nothing particularly modern, very limited gaming use. Resolution no bigger than 1366 x 768.

It gets used for a bit Minecraft now and again and a version of Flight Sim. And has to be supported under Windows 10.

They'd looked at a GT 710 from a local PC place for £40, which I said no too. It needs to be no less than a 8800GTX.

I will speak with them and see if their budget can be stretched at all.

I agree something low end but newer would be better. Warranty, compatibility, better video decoding etc.

Thanks for the help chaps.

I've picked up a 1030 OC from eBay for £40. Looking at some YouTube reviews it seems a nice modern entry level card that easily beats the old 8800GTX, plus less power usage, better compatibility and video decode bits.

Cheers!

No worries - let us know how it performs compared to the old card.

Should be a great card, although because of how stagnated the graphics card market is, it's a shame that 10 years on since the 8800gtx that the budget end hasn't improved much more.

1030 is a great choice at this level and at that resolution will play nearly all modern games.

BUT! (mods feel free to edit if you think its too close to price discussion)

40 quid is a very very good price, only seen a couple go at that price on the forums here and MM is definitely cheaper than the online auction house. Did you buy it second hand? Are you importing from China? Because there are a ton of fake cards doing the rounds at unrealistic prices.

I await the day we can replace the 1080ti with a bus powered £40 card and see a good performance increase! :p

As mentioned above - be lucky if that happens 10 years from now at the current glacial pace that improvements are trickled out/down
