Replacement For ATI 5850

Hi guys - I'm looking to sell my ATI 5850 and go with a comparable if not slightly better card from Nvidia. The reason I'm making this switch is I play the Total War series of games quite abit and the campaign map stuttering problem has still not been resolved for any of the 5 series cards on any of the latest drivers (inlcuding the 11.4 previews)

From checking the TW forums, it appears that there are a vast amount of users (All on ATI cards) experiencing this problem and the issue does not occur on Nvdia cards. The issue has been raised with AMD through their support system, however it's got to the point where I'm really not willing to drop back to the Catalyst 10.5's (which do not have the stuttering issue) thus sacrificing other game performance to play the TW series.

Can anyone recommend a comparable Nvidia card performance wise, or perhaps something slightly better. I'll be looking to sell my 5850 on a popular auction site once I have a good idea of which card to go for.

Many thanks

If you had a price range for the new card it would help.

GTX460 1Gb sits under/close to the 5850 for £124~ on OCuk i think.

GTX470 1.3Gb £169~ sits over the 5850 in most games but some overclocking on the 5850 can change this.

Btw ive been playing Empire Total war and Shogun 2 on my 5850 without any problems guessing its a hit and miss problem :S

If its been a known issue for nearly a year then I doubt its a driver issue otherwis it would have been fixed. Moreover a game issue with the constant stream patches from ca that fix some thing and break others.

As for the Nvidia card of choice a GTX480 for 200 notes is a the deal of the moment right now but cover your ears.

I went from a heavily clocked 5850 to a GTX 480 and the gameplay is much better with the 480. I was getting stuttering in several games with the 5850 but now have none at all. The Gigabyte ones with the good coolers would be the best bet if staying on air cooling.

+1 for the gtx 480 soc, theese cant be compared to reference cooled 480's as they use a far superior cooling system, therefore keeping noise/heat to a lot lower levels.

Just for reference I'm using a 5850 (stock speed) and playing Shogun 2 at 2048x1152, max settings, no AA and it's perfectly playable.

Tri-core Phenom II at 3.5GHz and 4GB ram.
