I was interested in going TFT but Im not convinced that its right for me in its current state.

1) I dont need the space

2) This issue of monitor lag:

I would rather wait until they have addressed this problem before I spend money on an LCD (bearing in mind my current CRT has been used from pentium 5 -133Mhz to nforce4 opteron), so I dont upgrade often.

3) The fact that firingsquad.com in their latest artical dont recommend TFT due to hardly any supporting blueray ect.

However I want to upgrade because my monitor has a "mains hum" which might not be a problem for some but its a serious issue I cant ignor any longer.

My current monitor is a Gateway vx700 17" and it uses Sony Trinitron CRT technology. Its specs are here:

I have my eye on a Samsung SM793DF:

However I just read a certain site which has user reviews and there is like 200 views of people not one mentioning point 2). on a Samsung 930bf.

Undecided need convincing.

might be that

most lcds run at 60Hz, so that's the maximum speed of it's update ... 60 times a second.

a decent CRT will run at about 85-100Hz, i.e. more (85-100) updates per second.

so there will be a difference in response times, in favour of the crt.

I definitely noticed it's much harder to hit things in twitch shooters like UT2004 on an LCD versus a CRT. That was on a standard 19" too (SM913B), not a high res widesreen. I think the electronics used to process the image leads to a delay, so what you're seeing on the screen can be a little behind what's actually happenning in the game. Hence you miss.

I doubt this would significantly spoil your enjoyment of most single player FPS games though. Not for most people anyway.

Im going to buy a viewsonic vx922 its apparently the best that is available for response time as measured on an oscilliscope:

I will be able to do side by side comparisons when I get it. If I dont like it Ill search for a decent 2nd hand crt.
