Hi experts,

My nr818 only gets sound if I switch it off at the wall for a while. This is my 2nd Onkyo receiver and the 1st one died on me too (a 609). Can you guys reccomemd a reliable good quality replacement. The speakers are Monitor Audio Rx6, RX centre and RXFX surrounds, oh and aBK Lithium+ sub.

My Sony DN1040 is still flawless after 2 years, thought it would be a downgrade from a Pioneer (dying) costing twice as much but to be honest i couldn't tell the difference!

Hi

I was in a similar situation to you had 2 Onkyo in the past and both failed just after warranty  never again.

Went with a Yamaha and never looked back its been excellent and is still going strong.. also it does not get hot like the Onkyo did.

What is your budget ?

Onkyo don't have a great rep for longevity sadly. If it's under 7 years old you can still claim against them if it's a known issue eg bad caps etc.

I'll certainly be looking to get this once 4k becomes more mainstream, especially with the HDMI support it has, and I like the way various bits of it can be upgraded through future firmware updates.

I've currently got an Onkyo TX SR-875 that has served me well since it was launched, the only failure it's had in that time was with the display controller, which was easily fixed by replacing a couple of caps for a few quid off eBay and a few minutes of soldering and putting it back together.

edit: as a sidenote with the Marantz, does anyone know if the HDMI inputs are assignable? I would have thought they would be, and it's a useful feature of the Onkyo amp.
edit 2: just noticed from one of the online pictures of it they are, that confirms it, I'll be having one of them!

Likewise my Onkyo amp is terrible, I have a 616 and the rear-left channel has blown, it just hums. Might try and claim on the Onkyo if it's 7 year warranty? Although I bought it when I was living in HK so not sure how that'll work.

If I could go back to my Marantz SR5200 I would!

I replaced my dead Onkyo 875 with last years LX58. I couldn't bring myself to spend another £600 on the LX59 at the time but i'm more than happy with the results. It's sounds so much better than the onkyo.

The new pioneers seem to have dropped a little since release too.

The setup is great, IPAD app on the network to configure all the ports and speaker setups and then you can use it to control and tweak afterwards. Loving mine.

I'll vote for the Yam too. Just look at the number of older Yam amps still working.
If you have the cash, you might want to go pre-pro. Lot more expensive, but better ones will be even more reliable and often sound better.

Contact Onkyo, I got my 609 repaired by them when it was 2 year out of warranty. It was a known fault so they fixed it without any hassle - great overall service.

ive still got my onkyo 606 lol

couple of hdmi ports are doin the cut out thing now but ive had it since 2008 and its been great till the common hdmi problem started last year

ill try replacing the capacitors like shown on youtube first then if not ill upgrade

im currently running monitor audio vectors with mine so ill prob go yam or denon

but i wont spend more than 500 on an amp no more

my 606 is ok for now..prob run out of hdmi ports first

but that marantz looks awsome plenty of hdmi ports

but how much...no thanks
