Hi guys,

Apologies for yet another 'recommend me' thread. I've just sold my computer which had an i5 760 (moving country).

I'm in the market for a new one obviously but from what I can see not much has moved on since I bought my i5 760 about 18 months ago! I don't care about rendering, just a competent CPU that will OC a little and do well with games.

I'm thinking the i5 2500k as a good all rounder that won't cost too much? Agree?

I just want to be sure in case i'm throwing my money away! I know the new Ivy Bridge CPUs are out soon so it's a bad time to buy but hey it happens!

Edit: lol, nevermind.

Jason - your words were valid, no need to edit them out.

I had to sell because shipping was going to cost me $$$$. I'd happily go for the same CPU as it doesn't look like much has moved on since.

All I do is web, games (BF3, Mass Effect, etc) and I don't even overclock that much. I'd happily get the cheapest thing going but bear in mind an i2500k is actually 137GBP over here in Australia so better than the 170 they seem to be there!

Good deal on the i5 2500K. At that price I would be tempted to go for that.

The Ivy Bridge is a bit faster per-clock and the graphics core is considerably faster than on the i5 2500K. However, it seems to run a bit hotter than sandy bridge when overclocked and doesn't seem to overclock as well on air. Therefore, considering your uses, these facts and the price of the CPU - I would personally go for an i5 2500K and a Z77 board.

Hey, so I ended up getting a 2600k i7. I know this is above my needs as I hardly do any encoding or editing but long story short I was buying an intel 330 180GB SSD and the place I wanted to pick it up from only had the 2600k in stock.

Bonus is that it only cost me $318 (£200) which is about a fifth less than the UK and only £30 above what a 2500k costs. in the UK
