Replacement for my 8800GT

Was this clocked any higher though as the extra Gig makes a ton of difference?

No it wasn't, so doesn't apply to your case 100%. ( it was C2D 2.00 @ 2.66;) ).
But I still cant see 1Ghz (remember its not "speed", but analogous to "revs on tachometer") making a "ton" of difference. OC from 2.00 to 2.66 DID make *some* difference, but changing to i5 was like night and day- on the same gfx card.

Absolutely, I agree the architecture will be a leap of difference for sure. However I have seen pre-built computers running stock get left for dust when comparing them to an efficient custom built rig. For eg in my case I know it's an old dog now (my rig) I can squeeze some life out of it yet without shelling out for new CPU/mobo/RAM.

I have another thread on which to get out of a 6850 or a 6870, the bonus being I know you dont like the C2D, but this P45 Platinum can run crossfire for a potential longevity of graphical power (I know, I know the CPU will limit it).

Thanks for all the advice, I ended up going with the XFX ATI Radeon HD 6850 1024MB GDDR5 and it seems to work well with my set-up, as I dont play games very often this should keep me going for a while plus if I want to I could also add a couple more screens.

Thanks :D
