Replacement GFX card for older PC

Hi,

Looks like sis's GFX card has died as there's major gfx corruption in and out of windows. I took the card out and set BIOS to use onboard GFX for the meantime, and windows is displaying OK.

The GFX card was one we bought her for xmas ages ago so that she could play TF2 and some basic games, which was not feasible with the onboard GFX.

So.... can anyone recommend a decent replacement for a 7600GT. Obviously the replacement should not be too modern as it is going into an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ with 2GB of RAM. Basically the fastest card that will not be bottlenecked by the system would be ideal.

Thanks.

Depends on your budget really, a really good value for money at the moment is the geforce gtx 550 there around £105, its 1 GB and dx11 and a bargain for the performance. you can go cheaper if your not playing game though but if shes got the money will be more future proof for blu rays and 3D games

Is the faulty card an AGP card or PCI-E? If its an AGP slot your probably best off looking for a second hand replacement or failing the from Overclockers the ATI 4350 card for 50 notes

If PCI-E maybe something like a 5570 or for a bit more a 5750? (dont forget to check the PSU has enough power and power connectors to power any additional 6/8 pin PCI-e connectors the card needs

It's PCI-E. I'm not sure about PSU and power connectors. The 7600GT that broke didn't need any additional power and I think to be on the safe side, I should try and aim for a replacement that doesn't either, and has fairly low power requirements.

Budget-wise, I was hoping that something could be had for £30 ish as her budget is limited. To be honest I'm surprised that £100 cards have been suggested as I thought the CPU would rule out those kinds of options. I guess I should change requirement to: cheap, no slower than 7800gt, faster is a bonus :)

my bro has a550 dual core unlocked to 4x athlon II, and my ex 4850cf setup, keeps it on top of the things he needs.

No you have the right idea...ignore JasonKnights's suggestion as he's clearly not considered the system's limitation.

Well, a few years back my system which was a Athlon 64 3500+, and it would bottleneck even my 8800GTS 320MB in CounterStrike Source, as single core CPU simple doesn't cut it and source engine game love extra CPU power.

My suggestion would be try to pick up a 2nd hand Athlon 64 X2 7750 if the motherboard would take AM2+ CPU...if not, try to pick up a 2nd hand Athlon 64 X2 6400BE instead; and then a 2nd hand 9800GT green edition for around £35-£40. There are 8800GT/9800GT models that are bus-powered and doesn't require external power.
