Currently my son is using a set of Plantronics Gamecon 388 headset and although they are reasonably sturdily built, the internals have let him down, the left ear keeps cutting out.

So he is looking for a replacement within a £50 or so budget, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, as I don't have a clue as to what is good and what isn't.

Budget can be stretched little if really necessary.

Cheers in advance.

Hyper X Cloud for both build and audio quality. You can find them for £50, there is nothing remotely close.
If they had good straight cable instead of coiled HD330/660 Superluxes would likely beat them.
Not sure about availability/price in UK.
But except for cable ~30€ HD330 basically has sturdier feeling construction than ~200€ full plastics Sennheisers...

Logitech G930 7.1 wireless surround sound headset can be had for £40 at the moment.
Well, wireless avoids cable getting pulled broken...
But then account cost of that wireless part and other gimmicks and budget left for actual part cost of headphones isn't that good.
And built in battery aging makes them disposable.
