Hello Chaps, as my previous thread about what car to buy, i have bought a new Audi A4 TDI 2.0 SLINE 05 plate, but the only question i have it only got one Key Fob, any idea how mucha spare FOB would cost?

Dont know about Audis but my mondeo only came with one key and you need 2 to program new ones. A new remote key is about £85 cut, but its not possible to program it without a second one so Ford want about £200 to reprogram the ecu and 2 keys (1 old 1 new)

You might be ok, with a merc you just phone up and give them your vin number, they order the key to match the vin, wildcard, but why not call audi and ask them?

Exactly, all cars are different - you wont know until somone either has an experience of audi (or probably a new vw/seat/skoda) or speak to them yourself

For what it's worth my old (1999) Seat only needed one key to program a new one...

I hope not, whats stopping me walking down the road getting the vin number from someones car then ordering a key so i can go an steal the car?

Really? You don't need two to re-program my Focus. £50 ofd some website, turn the key four times press a button, job done.

Can't you work out a deal with the garage you're getting the car from? When I purchased my Honda but I insisted it came with a second key else no sale, they promptly ordered a replacement and gave me a copy of the order before I agreed to the sale.

You obviously need proof of ownership when you order and collect it, you cant just walk in with the vin on a bit of scrap paper :p

Its the immobiliser chip thats the problem, as I found to my cost. Had a new key cut and ordered online - it operates the remote central locking, unlocks the steering columb but doesnt deactivate the immobiliser.

A local key place said they can copy them - you still cant make new keys yourself though as the car sees it as the same key. They tried with mine but it didnt work, apparently its encrypted :(

Is it true that in the past it was much easier to get a spare key from Mercs and that car thieves used this to nick cars whilst the owners slept or is that just an urban myth? Or is it me thinking of Gone in Sixty Seconds :D

Didn't they apply the same system when ordering number plates a few years back?
Back in the day you just went to a motor factor and recited what registration you wanted. This lead to the huge increase in "twinnies".
