Hi guys. I recently bought myself some lovely new USB 3.0 ports so I could use my new blackmagic intensity shuttle, which requires a 5.0GB USB 3.0 connection. Unfortunately, to my cost, I found out that a minor detail missing from specs I could find on the Abit website for my motherboard was that the PSIe slots I had on my motherboard were actually v1.0, and so my capture card won't turn on, as it isnt being given enough bandwidth to work.

Basically, what I'd really appreciate is if someone could suggest a motherboard that I could buy to replace the one I've got, that is, if possible, compatible with all the other hardware I have so that I need only replace the motherboard to get this darned capture card to work. Here is my hardware setup (slightly from memory :S)

Motherboard Abit IP35 Pro XE
400W power supply
Intel Dual core 2.60 GHz processor
2 x 2Gb DDR2 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT Graphics Card
2 x sATA hard drives
2 x sATA optical drives

I think that is everything :S

I basically need, if possible, a motherboard that is compatible with all of that(let me know if i've missed any details) and has PCIe v2.0 slots and/or proper USB 3.0 ports so that I can use my capture card. If there are a few options then I'd appreciate the cheapest option, as long as it's still decent, as I'm a bit strapped for cash.

I have a giant PC case so I doubt that the size of the Motherboard would be an issue.

Thanks guys, I'd really appreciate any help. I have waited 2 months already just for my capture card to arrive after I ordered it, and now it doesn't work :'(

Thanks in advance guys!

Bob

Could anyone at all please help me with this. I'd really appreciate it. My knowledge of motherboards is very limited and I don't really want to have to buy one only being able to cross my fingers that it is compatible.

Thanks

Cheers mate. My limited knowledge of mobos tells be that it being LGA775 it will be compatible with my processor. Since it says 4xDDR3 does that mean I will have to get new memory? or are DDR3 connectors backwards compatible with DDR2 memory?

Thanks for your help

Bob

As long as your card can run in a PCI-e x1 slot it should be fine. It only has a single 16x slot but the 16x and four 1x slots are pci-e 2.0. It's a good board and i have the newer version in my second pc. If you are needing a pair of full size slots, one for your graphics card and one for your capture card you are looking at something like a Asus P5Q Pro Turbo at around £95.

The only USB 3.0 motherboards for socket 775 that i can find are Gigabytes P45 and P43 versions both both use DDR3 i am afraid.

Hang on, how do you know those spare PCIe slots are going to be PCIe Gen 2? The intel spec says otherwise..

http://www.intel.com/Assets/Image/diagram/P43_Block_Diagram.gif

The gen 2 PCIe is only for the graphics slot...ie., the 16 lane slot.

You're going to end up with the same bandwidth exceeded error

You can use the ASUS USB3.0/SATA card that converts 4 PCIe Gen 1 lanes into 2 PCIe Gen 2 lanes if you've ordered this motherboard already. This should guarantee you avoid the bandwidth exceeded error

If that's the case then surely there are no motherboards that have 1x pci-e 2.0 slots? I have just dug my manual out and it does state that the 16x slot conforms to PCI-e 2.0 but no mention of the 1x slots, exactly the same with my Asus P5Q Pro Turbo.

My apologies. Yes, the motherboard manufacturer could put some kind of PLX type bridge chip on there to fold two Gen 1 lanes together to make a single Gen 2 lane. This is by no means the default setup (unlike the P55/X58 motherboards) though.

The spec for the motherboard above states the following:

1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16
(The PCI Express x16 slot conforms to PCI Express 2.0 standard.)
4 x PCI Express x1 slots
2 x PCI slots

Which to me implies all x1 slots are Gen 1.
