Hi, My A60 switch has been broken for a while, and now the screen is getting iffy, I have always been happy with the quality of pictures it takes, but it looks like I will need to replace it :(

So with a budget of around £150 ish and a predesposition for point and shoot simplicity with excellent picture quality (must be at least as good as the A60 for image quality), what would you guys recommend ?

The logical choice would be something like the Canon A630. You'll feel right at home, but with increase pixel, features, processing speed and all the improvments new technologies brings.

will the switches break though ? ;)

Just gonna look it up now ...

Edit ... Can't find if it has macro function and an output lead for direct pc download ?

The model down, the 540 is it much different ? its around £30 cheaper and only uses 2 batteries instead of 4 seems to have the same zoom modes just 6 mp instead of 8 .... which isnt a major concern for me TBH as the A60 is only 2 and still has better IQ than many 4 mp cameras I have seen.

What switches, it's all buttons apart from the one to go from Playback to Record mode

Yes to both.
(I have an A630)
:)

Yep, same as the A60 .. and thats what broke ... well it still in one and turns, but doesnt actually operate anything lol.
The switch on the 630 looks a bit better.

I had the A60, still do actually. It's kinda broke too, there's purple streaks across some images, to get rid of it, I have to hit it hard on the side. It'll be ok for a hundreds shots or so, or it could come right back next time i turn it off and on again.

I went to the S70 after that, then the 30D.

We had Canon A70 and I gave it to my sister due to upgrade. However, my girlfriend wanted one, I got A540 and I wasn't that impressed with image quality as compared to A70. Also its built quality clearly a step down from A70. It could have been a lemon but I decided to send it back and got Canon A610 instead which we're happy with.

A540 uses 2 AA batteries but the drawback is that flash power is lower and taking too long to recycle, something like 6 seconds. With Canon A610, because of four AA batteries, it has more powerful flash and would be ready in about 2 seconds or less.

I'm sure you would be happy with Canon A630.

I found a few review sites with some sample images and it looks pretty decent,

Thanks for your help guys, I think I will look to get the A630 and a 1 or 2 gb SD card (is it around 500 pics on a 1gb ?).

I think I got about 400ish using full size on it, Just got back from Canada have yet to go through 1.5Gb worth of pics. I can try and upload some "normal" user pics over the weekend if you want. They look decent enough in terms of quality, just probably not very good because I took them and it's my first camera :D

That would be handy, most of the website review pics are taken in manual mode by someone who knows what they are doing, some auto mode user ones would be great too see, but from what I have seen it looks like I will be happy with it.

Okay, here you go.

This was was taken from a moving car (about 40kph) from 50 odd feet away as it was by the side of the road.

If you want any more, or want full size, let me know.

My A60 did that too, when I had it. Got it repaired by Canon three or four times and it kept doing it, it sucked.
