What's my best option? Not really want a dual gpu card like the 4870x2.

So thinking 4890?

Needs to be around the 285 GTX's power but without this blasted coil whine noise!

you get no guarentee that a different card will not have 'teh whine'

I heard someone mention that tis coil whine dissappeared when he installed an enermex psu.

coil whine is random. No garauntee you won't get it with either ATI or nvidia cards.

Not that nnoying anyway.

It's very loud and very annoying. My PS3 / 360 don't scream and so I don't expect my £250 gpu to!

From what I understand the 285 GTX is notorious for it though so hoping one of the others will be better.

I don't anyone can recommend a card to that is going to be free of coil whine because it is just random. My 8800gtx had it and so does my gtx 275 to a certain degree but it is hardly noticeable and only does it on some menu screens.

the 4890 is really the only other option unless you get a 275 or a 295 thats your only options

or the 4850x2 4870x2 which you said you dont want.

Can't you get a warranty replacement? I don't know if they cover this kind of thing, but it's worth a shot, rather than downgrading to another card.

Most likely you're replacing it with another 285. The 4890 is slower isn't it?
All other options are dual gpu on one card solutions

^psu might be screaming, but if the coil making the noise is on the card it'll do it with any psu

My 4870 had coil whine, my GTX280 had coil whine.

Swapping brands is no guarantee I'm afraid :/

On the plus side, my GTX280 stopped having coil noise after about a months use :)

Cap/Coil Squeal is random. Both brands will suffer from this. I have a GTX 280 and it doesn't produce any Squeal. My previous 4870 was pretty bad.

In my experience changing the PSU can reduce the noise. Do you have another PSU that you can try?

Nope no other psu's to try - i've got a Be Quiet 650w... which i've tried to swap as per my other post :(

It's definately both the 285 AND the Be Quiet making whine noises, but the 285 is by far the worse!

I've already had the card replaced for another of the same but it whines just as before.

Yeah, it's the combo of both PSU and Card, there's no definate way to avoid it tbf.

Here's a nice(probably not an appropriate word :p) example of PSU coil squeal, for people that haven't heard it before.

I've never ever had it on any combination of OCZ PSUs and nVidia GPUs.

From a limited experience it seems quite common amongst people using corsair and seasonic PSUs - atleast the only people I know who suffer from it are using those PSUs :P

EDIT: I'm also a bit of a multi GPU junky - so I'd assume my chances of running into it would be slightly higher than normal.

That's strange, I've just rma'd an OCZ modxstream 780 watt psu because of the dreadfull whine it used to produce when gaming with my GTX 280.

Installed a second hand seasonic M12 700 watt from the bay, and the problem totally disapeared. I was only going to use the seasonic until I received my new psu from OCZ, but I think I will be selling whatever OCZ send me back now.

Tbh I think it's just luck of the draw.

Ah never tried the modxstream, mine are mostly gamexstream and fatal1ty lines.

Yeah my mate has the 700 watt fatal1ty psu and to be fair that's fine with his GTX 295 and a 9800 GT for physics. Like I said I guess it's just luck of the draw, but I do think that this is more a psu capacitor squealing problem than a Nvidia card problem. The symptoms I had were apparent with my old GTX 260 and 8800 ultra, but it just seemed to get worse with my GTX 280. My psu was obviously to blame from the offset.

I have an ATI 4870 which is quiet most of the time, it only gets noisey after a while of gaming on it and even then it's not a whine, more air sound. My 8800GT was the same, both have been running on a Zalman HP750 PSU. Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cense, your GTX285 is more powerful than any of the ATI cards isn't it? As the GTX260 and the ATI 4870 are just about on par with one another...
