Replacement PSU Fan Possible?

Possibly a stupid question, bit Im interested in getting my 500W PSU to be a bit more on the quiet side. I've been really happy with it, so dont really want to replace it.

Is it possible to open a PSU up and replace the fan...if so do overclockers have fans which would fit into a PSU?

I dont fancy killing myself trying to do this....so thought advice might be best before sticking my metal handled screw driver in there.

Hope its not a Q-Tec all other PSU's ive owned have been quiet and dont tend do go pop as much :p

Depends on the PSU really as fan sizes can vary, common sizes are 80mm, 90mm, 120mm or 140mm so you probably can get a replacement although it will most likely have a different connector, or none at all.

I really wouldnt advise doing this but the only thing you can really do is open it, take some measurements and then get a suitable replacement fan.
 
Do yourself a favour mate and get a quality PSU. Honestly most people on these boards wouldnt touch anything like that even if they were paid to do it. Although it may not be Q-tec, any cheap unbranded/"gold" PSU's are likely to pop at some point and will probably take your system with it. There is a reason why PSU's can cost so much and so little.

Invest in a quality Seasonic or Enermax PSU and never have to worrey about them again :)
 
It might be a tad harsh to say its a bad PSU because you havent heard of it..... I have seen the build quality close up (obviously) and Im really impressed. I have a PSU which cost 3 times more in my other PC, and this once actually seems better quality.
 
just cause it looks better, doesnt mean it is. dont cut corners not by skimping on a cheap power supply, you will only end up ( or run a high risk of ) it packing in and taking your full pc with it, which is going to cost a lot more than the £30 you would save on a cheapo psu
 
Mate, why do you think it costs soo little, if it was anygood it wouldnt cost that little, do yourself a favour and buy yourself a proper PSU, maybe a Seasonic 500W if your looking for silence, or you will regret it, and that 500W label is a joke, a good 350W will probably provide more power so I wouldnt expect it to run much.

Why should a higher capacity PSU be quieter? If you're going to mod a new cheap n nasty PSU why not just buy a good quality PSU in the first place? A 440W Seasonic is quite affordable, and silent.
 
Im still not quite sure why there is an issue about this PSU. Its been running for 6 months fine, and whilst physical looks arnt everything, I do feel that you can tell a lot about the quality of a component the way it feels, and by the quality of the cable configuration.

Also, most of the people here are overclocking their systems, which is a guaranteed way of reducing the life span of your components....never mind the PSU.

Only previous systems I have spend £60 upwards on PSUs, and I've had expensive ones blow on me.... taking out half my chassis with them.
 
Yes we may overclock, but in no way does that reduce the lifespan of the components if you know what your doing, i.e decent cooling, volts, psu....

Buy it if you want, it seems your hell bent on buying it and no one will change your mind, we warned you though, I personally wouldnt replace the fan on that neither as I dont trust the PSU lol.

i think its a great idea to change the fan in that power supply, perhaps fit one of those 120mm deltas in there might actually produce close to 500w then
 
Replaced many psu fans and its easy enough, some need the new power supply soldering on some just need to be plugged in.
They tend to take stadard sized fans (unless they are a dell psu)

Just be really careful, there will be plenty of power left in the capacitors to kill you even if it hasnt been plugged in for a month.

Right...on that note I dont think I'll be opening it up! I have had a good look at it though, and can see that it has a 100mm fan inside it, which looks easily changable....bit put off now about the dying thing though.
