I'm soon off to grab a replacement PSU for my rig as my current Hiper 580W is borked but I will be getting it replaced because its under warranty......so my question is would it be all right to use a cheapish PSU (i.e. Jeantech) for a few days til the replacement arrives? Also what do I need to check for compatibility wise, apart from wattage? Sorry its been a while since I last fiddled with my pc!

What are the ratings for yur cheapish PSU?? What is the brand??

Thinking about a Jeantech 400W. Will be powering rig in sig. I used one of the power supply calulators from a link off here and it said i only needed 308W. As i said it is only temporary, hopefully only a weekish, maybe 2.

I've just been out and they didn't have the 400W in stock, so i nabbed a 350W its cutting it close i know but i've powered everything up and it seems to be working ok. Is there a program or anything I can do to monitor the power usage? Obviously i wont be gaming just music and word fo now.

Incidently, what happens if i exceed 350W? will it just cut out or will it damage components? Thanks again.

It'll most likely just randomly reboot or error on you, just lighten the load for the time being if it worries you, remove extra cd-rom/dvd drives, extra USB devices, extra hdd's, etc......

My friend was running Qtecs for the last few years, then it went and took parts with it, but for short term use i should think a cheapo is ok, unless you just get really really unlucky.

Cheapest brand i go for personally are FSP (Forton Sparkle), worked with numerous cheapo ones, and had none of them destroy anything when they've failed, plus a 350W FSP PSU powered my old rig for years.... this is just preference though.

I thought Jeantech was a good quality psu.

Am i wrong to believe that?

I havea Jeantech 700w dual sli safe modular PSU cost me £75, had no problems and read some promising reviews.

Always check the 12v rail and what amps its is kicking out. I have an Enermax 460W with 34A on the 12v rail and it easily powers my 2 Opteron 285's, X1950 Pro and 5 harddrives. You can have a high wattage PSU that isn't worth the money without the amps to back it up. On a single rail PSU i wouldn't go below 18A.
