Replacement PSU

I built a lovely PC based on opinion from this forum some two years ago. All has been sweet until last night when my Hiper Type R 580W PSU popped.

I obviously need a replacement rather urgently and I figured buying the same again would make sense - all the cables are still connected up to the various parts of the PC, so I could just transplant the actual PSU.

However, I am hearing more and more bad things about Hiper and to be honest I didn't expect my expensive PSU to die within 2 years. I am not even sure I need such an extreme PSU - how are you supposed to know how many watts you need?

My system is pretty old skool:

AMD 3800+ San Diego CPU
2GB RAM
1 x 160GB SATA drive
1 x 80GB IDE drive
CD-writer
DVD-writer
Basic Audigy sfx
Radeon X800 gfx

Any suggestions would be gratefully received...

Ouch but yeah, but its the norm for those PSUs sadly :(

Some of the Antecs at 40odd quid around 400w will do you fine, id suggest pushing a bit if your thinking of any upgrades in the near future, the Corsair 520 is a bargain to be had!

What is your budget here? Any decent brand from 400w upwards should suffice for that system. As mentioned the Corsair HX 520w is highly regarded and would allow for upgrades in the future should you wish to take your PSU to a new system. :)

A nice Enermax Liberty 400w modular psu should do for your rig. You can get them for around £45 and they are really good. Quiet, reliable with decent amps on the 12v rail and the modular leads are far better than the Hiper (i had one go bang too).
