Replacement Radiators

Hi,

First post here but have been lurking for some time!

My partner and I recently bought a new home which started as just needing a tidy and has now turned into basically ripping apart every room and doing as much as we can... pretty sure that how it starts for everybody?

In the few rooms that we have had skimmed the radiators have been removed and in the process of doing so I noticed patches of rust and they were quite old in some cases. While they are off I am considering replacing them as well as installing some form of smart thermostat.

Looking at the cost of radiators they seem quite reasonable and lower than I expected but was hoping somebody may be able to advise on brand? Screwfix and B&Q both seem to sell Kudox radiators where as Wickes do their own brand, both have been recommended but by people with no experience of both radiators.

Also is there anything to consider as far as capacity or can I just take the BTU capacity of my boiler and as long as the sum of all radiators does not exceed that I will be OK?

Any help or advice will be appreciated!

Will you be fitting them yourself or will you need pipe work doing?

I've always sought advice from plumbers as to size/brand of rad for each room. We had huge rads here though and have therefore had the sizes reduced when we've updated them.

We did have an entire new boiler and most of the piping replaced though, the mavity fed system we replaced was OK with the pipework that was there but as soon as we had a mains pressure system we sprang leaks all over the place so we had a fair amount of plumber on-site time anyway.

Was planning on doing them myself along with any minor amendments to the pipework to accommodate any changes to the sizing of radiators. The one area where I probably will get a plumber involved is with the moving of the radiator in the lounge as it is currently located behind the sofa and I want it moved to underneath the window, opposite side of the room so a bit of work involved her I imagine.

The combi boiler we have is fairly recent (Worcester 24i Junior) and was only fitted around 3 years ago after the previous owners boiler failed but the radiators were not done at the same time.

I wanted to try and do it as cost effectively as possible which is why I was hoping to do it myself, plus i'm quite enjoying learning what I can and can't do myself!

I was planning on using a calculator such as the below to figure out the best size radiator for each room as the current layout seems to be heavily focused on heating the upstairs, which makes it unbearably hot within an hour of the heating being on.

Hoping to get the heat more evenly distributed as neither of us really need the heating on upstairs other than to take the chill off the rooms where as downstairs currently has quite small single wall radiators which are not suited for the size of room they are in.

Have had B and Q radiators in my house for 10 years now with only one issue the bathroom radiator is rusting from the outside in as the paint work was damaged during installation and by the time we noticed the dreaded rot had set in!

Prefer Stelrad or Myson myself. Plumb Centre own brand are really badged Myson premiums. I rate them is what is going on our house along with Hep2o pipe work.

Kudox seem decent for the money to me, not much different in price to a (Drayton) TRV! I have 4 fitted so far and no problems with them. I'm sure there are better radiators out there but not for the same price!

We have stelrad radiators and they are nothing special. Three of them are rusting externally and they have only been fitted for around 5 years.
