Replacement Remote Key Fob

Last night the unlock button on the key for my A3 (2003 8P1) decided to stop working. Thinking the battery might have been dying I swapped it out and followed the re-sync procedure in the manual but this stopped any of the buttons working (the lock button did work before changing the battery), so I can only assume the actual unlock button on the fob is broken as pressing this is the second step in the resync.

The key does still work to manually unlock the car and it does still start it so I can still drive it, its just an annoyance.

I have had a google and found http://www.autokeysquad.com/ who have quoted £209 for a replacement and will come to me, but thought I would ask on here if anyone knows of any good companies in the SE London area (I am in Greenwich) who might be cheaper that I should consider.

I would look at just buying a replacement fob on ebay and getting it coded, but not sure how much cheaper that would be or whether it is even a true viable option as the broken key fob is my only key.

Thanks

Pepp

Google Fu is an art form

Try this 1st (Taken from an Audi Forum)

"To sync your remote with central lock there is two ways. One you close car by key and in 1 sec press unlock button and it should work. If not second way is to clear memory and reprogramme all remotes. To clear memory in central lock put one of your keys in ignition and turn it to position on but don't start engine. After that get out of your car and with second key close your car (not with remote) and press 5x unlock button on your remote. The indicators supposed flash each time U press unlock. Next step open your car with key and take it out the other one and close car by key. Wait about 1 min and open car put one of keys in ignition and turn it to on.(Take it the fob from remote from key in ignition). Close all windows and close door by key and press on your first remote one time unlock and indicator supposed flash one time wait 15 sec and press and hold unlock for confirmation and car should open. Next step take key form ignition and test unlock and lock.
Do the same for other remote but when U will program it U have to press twice unlock and again wait 15 sec and press one more time unlock to confirm."

Hi Thanks for the response.

Unfortunately as I say I have already tried to re-sync the key using the instructions in the owners manual, but it involves pressing the unlock button which I believe is what broke. Any other methods require a second key and I do not have a second key.

I have a key fob with blade, the blade works to unlock the car and start it but the fob doesn't work at all. I could buy just new electrics and a replacement fob, but without a second key I cannot program it using any of the methods suggested online as I do not have the second key required.

So my current thinking is I bite the bullet and spend the £200 to get a completely new key. Then next month I buy a replacement electric part for my old key (about £40) and then program that using the new key following the instructions on line (two keys for £250 sounds better than one for £209).

The alternative would be to just buy the new electric part and get someone to program it to my car, but I am not sure how to find someone who would be able to do that near me.

Have you not got a spare?

Nope - when I bought the car it only had the one key, I kept meaning to get a spare but never got round to it (hindsight is a wonderful thing).

At the end of the day I can still open the car and drive it so its not the end of the world, it just means I cant unlock/lock the car whilst walking to/away from it until I spend some money.

Ah, it'd have just said use the duff one as a spare instead. I always make sure I've got 2 keys when buying a car, but hate to be captain hindsight

Can't you buy a second hand one, code it and swap the key blades?

Hello mate!
Might be worthy asking the same company to reprogram the second key for you? Don't they usually give those loyalty discounts to old customers? :D
Anyway, that is the same thing i did back last year!.. i had lost my keys and i had to call one of these companies to come and make me a new key cause when i rang the dealer i was told i had to wait at least two weeks before i could get the the new key.. ( I could not wait that long!)
then i decided to do it myself : i bought a genuine car key off ebay (very tricky thing! it took me awhile to understand all the codes and frequencies stuff) and got it laser cut to the hardware shop down the road to fit my locks. Next step was the programming of course: i tried following the one on the manual but no luck with that.. did a couple of google researches to look for other instructions and i found this :

1997 or later

Switch Ignition On and leave the key in the ignition
Lock the vehicle by using a manual key from driver’s door
Using the remote fob, press the unlock button – this should make the horn sound once
Wait for 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate the coding procedure. The remote control will now be programmed.
Switch ignition off
Remove key from ignition and check for operation
The coding procedure can be repeated up to 4 times for additional remotes
The ignition must be switched off between programming each remote control

Remote control erasing

1997 or later

Switch ignition on and leave the key in the ignition
Lock the vehicle by using a manual key from driver’s door
Press the remote control lock button 5 times within 1 second intervals. The horn should sound or the indicators flash
After 6 seconds press the unlock button once to activate memory erase
Switch ignition off

Remote control Synchronisation

Open the car using the driver’s door
Press the remote control unlock button
Put the key into the ignition and switch it on
Switch the ignition off and remove the key
Press a button on the remote control

Please make sure the vehicle battery is fully charged and the anti-theft alarm system is not armed or triggered.

Note: The anti-theft alarm and double locking module will exit programming mode automatically if four new remote transmitters have been programmed or if no new remote transmitter has been programmed within the 20 second programming mode.

i found it very simple and it worked for me.. might be worthy giving it a try before spending other quids!
goodluck mate!

Thanks for the replies.

Forgot to update this - I decided to spend £2 on a brand new replacement battery just in case and this has sorted it. The "new" battery I tried previously cant have actually been new as although it powered a little christmas light with no issues, it obviously didnt work in the fob.

Is yours a flip key? It will have two parts, the key and the fob bit. You can get all manner of key fobs from ebay, even 2nd hand ones will do, as long as the frequency matches. It's very easy to match a fob to a car, just not easy to match a key to it.

edit: seems all is well now, make sure your key batteries are good quality ones, people have had issues with el cheapo ones.
