Hi,
I am looking to replace the default search in windows 7 if possible , due to it
being useless ( I will qualify that statement by saying , when I ask win7
to search c drive and subdirs I mean just that , I want it to search EVERY folder, which it currently does not do)

Anyone know of any good replacements ?

Thanks guys

Never had any issues with Windows inbuilt search. I suspect user error tbh.

I am not so sure, it is fine, when you fully configure it, but it isn't as easy as it could be.

In XP you simply popped open search told it where and off it ran, in vista and now within 7, it searches default folders first, which is great for most people I guess, but not when going through hundreds of thousands of files stored across several different disks, and when your search criteria and limits cheange with each search.

You can get the same feature of search but the options are not as apparent and open as they once were, it's oversimplfied the basic options in my opinion.

Thanks for the helpful posts from some of you guys

No mate not user error , as stated Just want search to actually search every folder of a drive , currently it does not do this .... how do I know this .. I tested it.
I tried to locate a *.ost file on my C drive , got windows to search C: and subdirs it found nothing :(
I managed to manually locate the file after a while ...... so my conclusion is that win7 search does not search everywhere even tho I told it to.

Or is there something Iam missing ?

I will give those tools a go today , thanks again guys

I wish there was a way to unlock the Windows 2000 search that you can get in XP. This with indexing would rock

Everything is pretty good

Anyone know if there is any method of making Everything appear
when you Hit F3 on the keyboard ( as in is it possible to replace carpy windows search with this?)

Thanks for your input , any chance you could either

1. Answer the question asked.
OR
2. Ignore the thread

Thanks

I am trying to grasp the concept of what your problem is first. :)

Jeez I dont know how to make it any clearer without resorting to crayon style
pictures.

Simply put (so that the hard of understanding might grasp it)

Windows7 search does NOT search every subfolder even when asked to.

So for example if I search from C: and ask it to search subfolders for a particular file.
It does not find that file on C drive , BUT the file is there ?
I was searching C: for *.ost files that outlook uses == no results from search

Is that any clearer ?

Mine finds the .pst file which resides in the same place that .ost files do. It also finds any other file in that location, such as the cache files. As does the Directory Opus search.

And no, I've not added anywhere to the indexing options as like I say, I use Directory Opus, so the Windows indexing is almost redundant.

Jees well if you bother to configure it properly it might work! The OST file will be in a hidden folder or a folder windows can't access by default there for you need to turn off hidden files folders.

I understood you perfect, your blaming Windows Search for the issues your having!

So even though
show hidden files, folders and Drives
Is ticked in folder options and has been applied to ALL folders(Which by my understanding shows hidden files folders etc)
and it is told to search all subfolders it still wont find it.

(FYI first install of any OS I do I always set it to show ALL FILES , makes things easier in the long run)

@ Gav , how do you like directory opus? Its a explorer replacement I have not tried yet
Gave Xplorer2 a go and also xyplorer both were okish but just not all-in-one

Does anyone have any usefull input ?

It's fantastic. It's probably not quite worth the asking price, but miles better than the free ones I'd tried previously and clearly a a lot better than Explorer itself.
