Replacement Sli Bridge

I have a Asus Rampage V Extreme
My graphics cards are in the No 1 and No 3 slots, and I am currently using the ribbon SLi cable that came with my mother board.
I have tried fitting the 3 way SLi (Cos it'll look neater) that come also with the board, but have come up against a problem. The fans case of my top card catches on what would be the middle card socket.
If I was to buy one of the ROG 3 way SLi bridges (L) can it be configured as just 2 way removing the middle connections all together? Or can you suggest another option.
A friend suggested removing the middle connections on the three way that I have, can this be done. Will it work?

Looking at the website for the SLi bridge, it looks like the 3 way is not configurable to remove the SLI connectors in the middle.

I guess you could cut off the connectors, as long as you do it carefully and don't short out any pins it 'should' be fine, but an expensive mistake if it goes wrong!
