just having a mooch around at maybe upgrading my current front L+R speakers on my 5.1 kit, the main issue thats stumping me at the mo is i cant find any sort of comparison of my current ones online.

what i have now was bought as a complete kit new, its a technic's sa-dx940 amp, which came with a eltax 8" sub and 5 technics sb-afc 140's.

all i know about the 140's is whats on the back of them, they are 8 ohms and are rated at 200 watts (100 watt din). and they weigh about 1.8kg's

just trying to work out how much id have to spend to get a noticble upgrade over the front ones (the others eventually) for when i run it in stereo for music.

The Technics are probably made of MDF which accounts for some of the weight. That's not a bad thing. However, they are designed as a surround speaker rather than a Hi-Fi speaker. Something along the lines of a Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 (£99/pr) or Tannoy Mercury V1 (£119/pr), Mission MX1 (£119/pr) would be a significant step up. These are true Hi-Fi speakers so the performance is in another league. The Tannoys and Missions also have matching centre speakers so they are good long term choices.

A smaller step up would be something like the Cambridge Audio S20 (£99) or the various Gale speakers @ (£69-£99). Cambridge Audio has matching centres available. Gale doesn't.

yeah id guessed id be aiming at around 100+ for a new set. got a feeling its going to be better saving the cash for now and look again when i can get something a bit better later on. maybe 300-400 range.

thanks for the info though.
