Just had a quote from a local company whom we have used in the past and to replace the wood facia's and soffit's for a 3 bed detached average size and to provide scaffold for working over conservatory came to £4.5k

Is this reasonable or should I wait to see if they discount further?

That sounds bloody expensive, from what my builder last year was telling me uPVC soffits and fascias are cheap and replacing existing is a simple job.

Unless you have a very large/complicated house I'm shocked at that quote.

The brother of one of my bosses had a similar price quoted to him by CR Smith to do the same thing. Think it may have been a grand cheaper but still seems quite high.

material cost would be at most £4/500

Comedy quote.

Its a weekend DIY job if you're up to it.

This.

I paid £240 to have the lower part of my house upvc replaced and some readjustment of top parts.

I imagine yours will be more than usual as they will be getting rid of the wood. For sure get some more quotes.

Me and the neighbour paid around £200 for gutters, fascias downspouts etc for both of our semis. We did it together one Sunday, took about 3/4 of the day. Granted a tower was available on site due to other building work that we were able to utilise.

It does sound expensive, but it all depends on the house and the condition of the rafters, gable ladder etc. If they are rotten that might have been factored in?

Are they going to be fitting eves protectors? This means having to remove the first row of tiles and pushing up the second row. which adds a lot of time to the job, but well worth doing.

He mentioned about removing tiles and fitting a new membrane / sheet and also we would need a scaffold tower above the conservatory and more scaffold at the other end.

I had a quote from the company some years ago and it was around the £3k mark i'm sure but can't find the written quote.

Can anyone recommend me a good company in the Leicester area so I can get another quote?

Really expensive - I had my 5 bed detached done for £800 which included the cast iron guttering and down pipes being replaced with plastic. They didn't use scaffolding over the conservatory, they did it from above (i.e. on the roof) and with weight spreading boards on the conservatory roof.

Must have been a quick cover over job rather than removing the old timber facias. There's no way they could do it for that price on a 5 bed detached for £800 for full replacement. How long did it take them?

How many quotes have you had?

The usual rule applies - get three and all things being equal, go with the midde one.

But that sounds bloody expensive to me!

Yup - all the old wood came off. Took them from from 07:30 to 18:30 one day. 5 people on the team.

Talking to them while they were quoting indicated they were a new group of ex window fitters that had got together to set up thier own fascia/guttering business, so I guess the price had an element of "portfolio building" built into it and I always like to give enthusiastic startups a chance. The guy that built my conservatory was the first one he'd ever built - and he did an amazing job as he used it to show new customers what he was capable of.

£500 to do a three bed detached, it was just a bunch of dodgy looking blokes that turned up one day and at the time I had the money, they did a reasonable job over two(?) days. Still looks OK 10 years later.

You don't need scaffolding to span a conservatory, just nail the boards either side.

Don't have that brown plastic stuff that goes on the eaves, it looks stupid and does nothing.

Ouch.

I replaced all my doors and windows. Including cutting a hole for new french doors. Replaced all soffits and fascia's and wood for less than that.

I have no idea how you got those prices then, that's near enough what we pay for the materials alone on a 3 bed detached sized job.

You need to nail them into every rafter, which are roughly 16" apart. Otherwise the weight of the tiles will make the fascia sag.

If they're fitting eves protectors then they will need to remove the bottom row of tiles and push the second row up, so would need a scaffold to do this safely.

This is what the felt usually looks like when you take the timber fascia off, so i'd always fit eves protectors.

they must have been "portfolio building" as that is a loss leading price if ever I heard.

Materials alone would be around £500 so paying 5 guys £350 plus all the other costs of a business would be mental in the long term.

I got quoted £2k for a 4 bedroom detached for fascias and downpipes etc. That was taking off the old wood etc.

Also had a £1200 quote from some random guy at the door but that was just nailing over the top of the wood

Just had a second quote from another company who's sales patter was better than the first but price wise it comes in at £6k lol

So £1.5k more than the first quote, this is to strip out the wood soffits and facia's and to replace with white uPVC with down pipes and guttering. To also supply scaffolding.
