Hi all,

Basically I'm pretty sure the motherboard in my wife's PC has died, it's an X99 system with a 5820k and 4x4GB@2400MHz. Basically it refuses to even POST, no error codes or anything not even the fans spin up, I've tried swapping memory/storage/PSU/GPU and no luck so it's either the CPU or the motherboard, I'm leaning towards the motherboard.

Whilst the system is getting on a bit it's still a 6 core CPU and holds up perfectly fine performance wise for what she needs, so it seems a shame to replace the CPU and have to buy a new CPU water block as well as the motherboard (CPU is under a custom loop as it was my last main gaming pc).

Has anybody got an experience of any of these suspect looking Chinese X99 motherboards that seem to be readily available? Doesn't need any fancy features, just the ability to take 4 ram sticks and an M.2 Drive. Another option would be to go an auction site and buy something used from one of the more well known western brands, but that seems like it might be a gamble as as well.

failing that the other option would be to cut my losses and buy into a modern platform but it's going to be the more expensive route.

I would normally say go full upgrade but I can see why you'd want to avoid this due to your WC setup. There is an X99 bundle on eBay with a 5930K, Gigabyte board & 16GB RAM for around £150 so that might be a good shout as at least then you should be able to rule out the faulty part & then sell anything you don't need that's left over!

I'll check that out, I've also got an order in for a slightly sus looking X99 motherboard from the same auction site, it was only £60 and I'm genuinely excited to see what kind of wacky board actually turns up. It's a UK stock/seller so if it's not right I can just send it back with less hassle than some of the Chinese ones.

Personally I'd avoid anything that looks like a cheap chinese knock off you can pick up used motherboards on ebay that are the real deal just been pre-loved you might say clearly part of a machine that was broken down for spares had to buy one myself a couple of years back had no issues with it. Funnily enough it cost more than the original board did new but they stop making them after a couple of years and theres a demand for spares.

Depending on how quickly you are after a replacement and whether the above one works out, I am hopefully upgrading my system towards the end of the month and will likely be sticking the existing parts up on the MM.

Edit: Upgrading next week now.

So this arrived the other day:

No fancy packaging, no instructions, just an IO shield, but reasonably well packaged.
Build quality certainly exceeded my expectations.
The BIOS is your basic American Megatrends Bluescreen job, but the options are extensive, it even appears to support overclocking...
Anyway I rebuilt the system and it booted from the NVMe drive first time, so all well at the minute.
