OK, so i'm fed up with Norton and would like to replace it with other apps

I have known for a while that Norton takes up a lot of resources, but havent been too bothered until now as i just, upgrade the memory cpu etc. But most of our computers here are ancient and i would like to see what kind of difference removing Norton from them would have.

I have started using Tuneup Utilities, which is superb and easily replaces Norton Utilities, plus i have O&ODefrag.

I don't use Norton's firewall because i find it too much of a pain to configure, i used to like Neowatch, but have now switched to the free Sygate one - or can you recommend another? And no, the windows one will not do.

Which leads me to Anti-virus software... i have been looking around at reviews and it seems the BitDefender seems to be the best and also has a firewall, is this the case?

Is there another good alternative to Norton Ghost? I use this a lot and having the ability to back up disks then being able to view and extract the contents in Windows when required pretty much essential.

Cheers

I'm in much the same position at the moment, I want to get rid of system works cos the subscription has expired. I've tried Tuneup Utilities but would really like something to replace the defrag tools of system works. what's the software you've got like, is it any good???

Norton system works is worse than nothing, so it doesn't matter what you get tbh.

Nod 32 for antivirus and acronis for ghosting.

Bugger me Acronis is fast! Recently everytime ive tried to back up a drive using Norton Ghost in windows, its given me some weird 'descriptor' error or something, wheras Acronis just gets on with it - Excellent thankyou ;)

One of the things that annoys me about Systemworks is that when you you want to get to the interface to to use the Utilities or Antivirus, if found even on a reasonably fast computer you seem to have to wait a while. On a slow computer you have to wait ages! Also when doing a virus scan on Norton it takes up nearly all the computers resources to do so, except 2003 where you can set it to low priority in the task manager - but you have to do it manually each time.

I've been trying BitDefender 10 because i found somewhere i can download the virus definitions separately - for offline updates. But i have been having some problems with it - connection issues and sometimes it crashes.

Is there somewhere i can download a definition pack for Nod 32? - this is pretty much essential as most of our computers do not have an internet connection.

Ok bit defender is giving me all kinds of problems, so i think thats one to avoid.
No external updates for Nod32 - Will try KAV

So whats a good firewall?

If you have a router you won't need one as they already have one built in.

Highly recommend Acronis True Image (trial here). Also get Acronis Disk Director (also here).

I also find TuneUp Utilities 2006 great coming from Systemworks earlier in the year.

Defragging, for me has to be Diskeeper
