hey peeps

Just come back from corfu on holiday and at the airport i brought a copy of custom pc for the flight.

The build im using atm is getting a little long in the tooth, i'd really like to get a i5 processor but funds are limited at the minute considering ill need some new ddr3 ram and a new mobo for the i series processors. Anywho custom pc had a 6 page article on the 460 basically raving all about it and im sold on buying one.

I know the 1GB 460 cards are faster than the 768mb ones but im just wondering what kind of improvement ill see over my current 4850. Theres about a £50 difference between the two 460's so is the 1gb version worth it or just best off with the 768? Just want to play strategy games, battlefield etc.

Also ive got my E8400 running at 4ghz at the minute will this bottleneck a 460? Cheers

Well 1gb is going to be better but the 768mb version is still going to be a good upgrade from a 4850 512mb. What resolution so you use? If its 1680x1050 or below then the 768 will be fine. If it's 1920x1080/1200 then you will find certain games will get get quite a benefit from the extra 256mb VRAM. That said, it's still a great card for the money. the 1gb OcUK card comes with a few games which makes the price gap a bit smaller.

I went from an E8500 @4ghz to an i5. Everyone has their own opinion on dual or quad for gaming but I find it a lot better. For me the difference was ironing out many of the small dips here and there. Dips that spoil the smoothness of some games but often only have a tiny negative affect on average frame-rates in benchmarks.

Thanks for the reply mame.

Yea 1680x1050 is what i use as i have my pc running through a 1080p tv in my room. I just see these cards going for a good price so i thought i'd snap one up. Ended up going for the 768mb asus top.

If i can get a hold of a q6600 second hand will that improve things any? If not maybe beginning of next year ill get a i5 setup just trying to squeeze as much as i can out of my current setup. I dont have to have games running flat out at crazy res to enjoy them aslong as i get decent quality with steady fps.

I have a ps3 and xbox sitting next to my pc but theres just some games consoles cant deliver on :)

The Q6600 may not clock as high as your E8400 and it will be a lot more power hungry.

If a cheap and really good sample comes up then it wont hurt, there are some titles that love some extra cores, but there are quite a few who don't.

For GTX460 768's level card, your E8400 at 3.6GHz would be fine. But if you are gonna overclock the GTX460, then I would suggest you have a go on overclocking your E8400 to higher...4.0~4.2GHz may be (if you have a decent cooler that is).

Go for the 768mb £50 isn't worth the extra 10% performance the 1Gb gives :)
