replacing 4870

Looking for a new GC and everything seems to be pointing to 6950 but need a sanity check

Have the following, running on Win XP

i7 920 @ stock in GBYTE EX58-UD3R
Sapphire 4870 1G
Antec NeoHE 430W
4GB Corsair DDR3 1600 XMS3
Iiyama E2201W-B2 (1680x1050)
Antec 902

Looking for something which is quiet(ish), gives enough performance boost so I can play BF/Crysis/CoD type games close to max on my monitor, which won't be changed unless it dies and ideally not after a new power supply.

Money is generally not an issue and if I see the need, I could go for a new psu, although I'd probably get Win 7 and SSD at the same time.

I want to avoid heat and noise. I do regard 4870 as very hot and from what I've seen on different sites, seems like a power hungry one. I had my i7 running stable on 3.6 or 3.8, was long time ago but the amount of the heat coming out of the case was just too much and I don't really need an oc. Have akasa nero cooler.

So the question is, would 6950 suit me?
Is it worth upgrading to Win 7 for DirectX 11?

Any other suggestions?

Don't care if it's ATI or nVidia, had both in the past although my motherboard would support CF but not SLI.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the replies.

Fiocca,
your topic pretty much persuaded me to wait for BF3. There is nothing at the moment which I can't play with my rig, just got upgradetitis so if the disease is quickly cured, will hopefully come back in oct/nov for the new kit.

Arc,
Looked at 480, which is definitely better card but will definitely need a new psu. Was comparing both on some other sites and for my resolution, there is not much difference (480 still 5-20% faster but who cares if it's 80 or 90 fps). Little bit concerned with the noise, which seems to be an issue with the standard coolers. So once I decide to upgrade, will have to go for SSD + Win7 + PSU + whatever card seems the best value for money.
