Hi there guys first of all thanks for taking the time to read this thread.

Im currently looking to upgrade my graphics card and just wanted some of
your thoughts before i jump in and buy 1.

Tbh cant remember my full rig but just a rough guess at wat i have is ... i7 @ 2.8 not overclocked... 6gb ddr ram .... 4870x2 .... if u need to no alt else just post

So Lets get to the point i basically play sc2(starcraft 2) like 100% of the time and if not some css(counter strike source) so dont need a card super super powerful .I have been looking at the 5870s and the gtx470 series and just wanted your thoughts on these cards and what you would go for

BUT in my opinion i am going for a card to powerful for what i need and am contemplating settling for a 5850 or a gtx460 i wat a card that will last a recent amount of years and is future proof for that amount of time, just wanted ur thoughts but dont want to get a gfx card below the 5850 series tbh.

Oh and 1 last thing does the make of the card really make a big difference is it worth just going for the cheaper models etc as i dont plan tinkering with the voltage and overclocking etc, i noticec they are all the same speed and dont fancy paying like £30-£50 extra just for a different brand

Sorry for the long winded post and for those of u that stuck it out and read it i am really grateful and look forward to hearing wat u have to say

What power supply and what res is your monitor?
There are new cards coming out from ATI (and Nvidia allegedly although I have seen no dates anywhere) so you might want to hold your horses for a month or so.
I've got a 4870x2 aswell, but I'm hoping I can stretch it out until 28nm chips are supposed to be released sometime mid next year. I play at 1900x1200 and everything I play is still running nice and smooth. Is there a reason for the upgrade or has the shiney bug bitten you?

a 5850 and 470/460 gtx is a down grade on what you have got at as i was looking to change my 4870X2 last night as i thought it might be broke but its just my psu and the only really upgrade's are 5870 or 480gtx but with them being single gpu's you wont get micro stutter and use less power in the 5870 run off thing's

i would stick with what you have got till the next gen off graphics card's come out

thanks for the replys, my power supply is only 650w i believe not at my main pc atm and my res is 1920x1080
erm and ye basically nothing really wrong with my card i dont really have any trouble and runs what i need at pritty much max settings with very little jitters just had some spare cash and wanted to upgrade

and with the 28nm chips you mentioned i take it when these cards are realsed mid next year they will no doubt be steap in price when they first come out? and i take it they will be faster etc? wat will this cip type improve in the cards?

There should be a refresh from both ATI & Nvidia on the current 40nm process that will offer somewhere between 10 - 40% over 5870/480's, if rumour is to be believed, sometime before xmas.
The next gen after that should be built on a 28nm process and again, if rumour is to be believed, should offer significant improvements over 40nm cards.
It's your call mate, if you have cash burning a hole in your pocket then atleast wait for the new ATI cards in Oct/ Nov. Then look at reviews to see what card offers you the best performance at your price range in the games/res you play.

nothing wrong with that........depending what brand it is of course, a corsiar HX650 should be more than powerfull enough

its just because iam running a e5300 x48 mobo 6x hhd's and a 4870x2 and iam getting crashe's due to not enuff power and i've got a 650w TT toughpower

to be honest, a 4870x2 is a brilliant card. theonly reason i would upgrade from one is if a DX11 game came out, or i wanted some lower temps in my system.

but a 5850 or 5870 are both brilliant cards, and the 470 is too, powerfull enough to play near enough anything on full.

i can play GTA4 on highest at about 45fps, even on my stock CPU speed.....

The only problems with the 4870X2 is the massive amount of heat it produces and the current Crossfire driver issues which might affect some of your games.

Like many have said wait until October - November time look at what the refresh's offer and buy the best single gpu you can afford.

Personally I dont think getting lower temps in a system is worth an upgrade. In the case of graphics cards, most exhaust out the back so even if they run hot shouldn't affect the rest of the system. And the components in hot running systems will probably be worth nothing by the time they expire anyway, they're built to handle pretty high temps.
For example, who's kept a processor long enough to experience it expire? Even if it runs 10degree higher in one system,I doubt the MTBT would be that much different. Unless stupidly overclocked, but that's different.

Sounds like OP should keep their current card, for now at least, until it starts struggling in any new games they buy

its not the heat that kills overclocked hardware its the extra voltage but heat can kill hardware if it exceed's recomended thermal spec
