Replacing 9800GT or getting something for in SLI ?

I'm upgrading my system as i haven't done that for many years and it's about that time again.
I've just bought two 2 TB seagate's and an SSD of here, and i'm about to upgrade my mainboard & cpu.

At the moment i've got a Asus P5b mainboard, with Quadcore intel 2.4 ghz CPU and 6 GB ram.

Next month i'll be getting an “Intel i5 3570k @ 4.4GHz - Asus P8Z77-V LX - 16GB Corsair DDR3 Overclocked Gaming Bundle”, or something similar.

Now at the moment i've got a Nvidia Geforce 9800GT 1024 MB, which i believe i can peer up with a similar card in SLI to double the video memory ?

Is that worth it, or is this card so old that i'll be better off getting a new card now ?

Not worth it, I had a 9800GT 3 years ago and it was pretty low spec back then as it had to fit in a shuttle with a 300w psu.

You definitely need to upgrade the 9800GT. It depends on your budget but I would get something like a Radeon 7850 or higher to go with the rest of your system.

I would take the AMD/ATI route right now given the choice. A 7850 or if you have the money i would opt for a 7950 and go for one that comes buddled with the games.. The games alone would be worth it :) especially with them being all new titles being released soon!

What PSU do you have at the moment? Will that be upgraded too?

Cheers guys.

Currently have a 600w PSU. But someone in another thread here advised to get a new one, of a decent brand, as mine is made by "essential". He said 450w would be enough if it's a decent brand. Would 450w be good enough for that 7850 2048MB ?

Is there a big difference in AMD and Nvidia cards ? I've allways had Nnivdia cards as far back as i can remember.

It would be enough yes but it would be treading it fine i would have thought. I would opt for a larger psu if you're going to replace it anyway. By doing so you're opening up your upgrade path for the future allowing you for bigger and better upgrades like maybe a high end single card solution or crossfiring 7850's if you feel like its not enough power for you at a later date.

I would be looking at getting a psu thats around about the 650W area or higher. Otherwise if you do end up upgrading your system again in the future you'll be looking at buying yet another psu.

I recommend a corsair HX650W psu as its sli/xfire compliant with a very good rating.

"Essential"? You mean "Enhance"?

PSU might be decent. I would get a 550W PSU for a 6950 / 660ti / 670. Like a Corsair TX550M, or a Antec HCG 520M, also good. You can go higher, it's up to your budget, but £65 will get you a nice unit.

Ta, i shall look into those ones.

PSU does state "essential" not "enhance" though :

30a on the 12v is pretty pants. That's only 360w.
Chances are that unit would have quite the ripple on it as well.

How do you get the 360w ? So do i have to look at the ampere on a new PSU as well then, or shouldn't i worry about that if i go for one of the ones adviced in the posts above ?

And what does ripple mean ? (I'm Dutch, so English isn't my first language)

Power ripples.

30*12 = 360W :)

amps * volts = watts

Ah i see. But how can they sell a 360W PSU as a 600W one then, surely that's misleading ?

And thanks for the advice IC3, i'll probably get those.

It can only push 360W down the 12v rail but was rated to supply 600w across all rails hence the 600w box goes across all the voltage values in the picture.

As no one has mentioned it yet from looking round i've seem the required amps on the 12v ranging from 26-30v so at the very least i would say don't overclock on that psu.

Decided i'm gonna push the boat out a bit more and go for a 3GB graphic card, so looking at that msi hd 7950 and similar cards now, but did read that people had problems with them.

Also, will that Corsair tx550 be powerfull enough for those cards, or would i need to look at something a bit higher ?

You wont regret your choice, the 7950 is a great card . The tx550 will be fine but if you are spending so much money on new kit i would spend an extra £16 and get the tx650 .with things overclocked more is best when it comes to power !

Just noticed the tx750 only another £3 on that . Then if you decide to add another card? all is ready

Cheers for that. Just saw the reviews for the TX 650W on here and they are all very good so will go for that one.

Just about to finalise "the great upgrade" in the next few days now, which will consist of :

- Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz
- Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Intel Z77
- TeamGroup Elite 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
- Xigmatek Aegir SD 128264 CPU Cooler
- Corsair TX650 PSU
- MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr III OC V2 3072MB
- Samsung 840 PRO SSD 256 GB

It's making a big dent in the wallet, but that should see me through for a while again.
Looking forward to playing some of my favorite games on it!
